registration page for multiple events

I feel like I’m running around in circles trying to figure out how to create 1 type of event that is offered on different dates and for the registrant to be able to go to my event page and then simply select from a drop down menu which date they would like to attend.  I have set up recurring events, and has created the multiple dates but I have no idea for those dates to appear on the registration page.

I followed the instructions with custom files etc.  I then created a page with the short code [EVENT_CSS_DROPDOWN] and when I view the page it just shows me the short code.

It may be that the custom files add-on was installed in the correct location. There are some specific instructions on how to install the custom files add-on here:
