Recurring Events opens closed events

For our recurring events, sometimes we have to close registration to an upcoming event early for scheduling reasons. When that happens and we need to edit that event (add/change a price, add a promo code) and use “All events in series” Event Espresso will re-open the closed events in the series, changing the registration dates.

When we try to use “This and all upcoming events” nothing happens at all, neither the edits to the current event nor any other are saved at all.

Hi there,

I tested this out on a few test sites that are running the current version of Event Espresso (3.1.34.P) and could not reproduce this.

Here are a few tips that may help:

After you make the changes and after you click the radio button labelled “This and all upcoming events”, you need to make sure to click the Update Event button.

When you’re closing one event that belongs to a recurring series you can set the registration end date to a date before today’s date, then select “Only this instance”, then update the event.

I’ve installed 3.1.34.P on the staging site and am still seeing the same behavior. Here are the steps to reproduce:

– Create a recurring event, Registration Start date in 2011, Registration End date set to the Event Start Date.
– Select “No (each event’s registration start and end dates will be incremented according to a formula).”
– Create 3 manual events one month apart
– Verify
– Go back and edit the 3rd event changing its Registration End date to be in 2011 so that it is closed, choosing “Only this instance”
– Now edit the 2nd (open) event and add a new Price
– Before saving select “All events in the series”
– Update Event

Event 3, which was previously closed, is now reopened. If I try to select “This and all upcoming events” nothing is saved at all, not even the new price on the current event I’m editing.

Thanks for the detailed explanation on how to reproduce this.

If you go back to one event in the series, make some changes, then set it to change “All events in the series”, it can cause conflicts like this. When you make a save one recurring event and select “All events in the series” it saves the current event’s options across all events.

In this case the registration dates are set to increment according to a formula. This will in effect update all the event dates according to a formula when one event is updated.

Here’s an additional tip that will help: You can set the event that you need to close for registration to “Not Active” without changing any dates. If you need to make changes to the all of the other events in the series it will open the closed events, so these will need to be set back to Not Active again.

With the This and all upcoming events option not working: I believe this save option will only work with the Automatically create dates option.

Note – this happens regardless of whether the registration dates are set using a formula or if “all created events are available for registration between the above registration dates” is selected.

With several hundred events and the need to have the flexibility to close some as circumstances arise, we’re really looking for another workaround. The “Event Staff/Speakers” has a checkbox that allows you to choose whether Staff member changes are applied to all events in the series. Without hacking the core plugin, would it be possible to add something like this to other sections like Price and discount codes?

I don’t think there is a way to accomplish this with the REM add-on. I’ve sent a note to the lead developer to see if he has any ideas that will help.
