Recurring event duplicating problem

Hi there!

I am creating a website for a small movie theater, thus my customer needs a simple way to upload movie information into their website and update new time and dates for each movie at least once a week. I found recurring events feature extremely useful for this, it allows my customer to put up many dates in same time. Thank you for this lovely feature!

We encountered a problem however when adding new showtimes for already existing event. For example we have already added a specified dates and time for a set of showtimes for one week, but for next week the showtimes and dates are always a bit different. This is why I thought it would be handy to duplicate an existing event and add new times there: this way it wouldn’t affect dates and times for this week’s upcoming shows and my customer need to put up information, such as event description, featured image etc. again. They should be able to simply just fill in new times.

However, when I duplicate an event, it doesn’t show up as duplicated in the Event Overview: it shows only one event. It used to work fine when I tried it first times; showing up two clearly identical events in same page – but suddenly it stopped working. After duplicating an event, when I changed the filter to show “All Events”, it shows me error message like this: Screenshot

I am able to view and go edit a duplicated event there, in “All Events” filter, but as I put up new times, it overwrites the already existing ones. The old events simply just disappear. It keeps the event posts though (I always need to create these so I can list the showtimes under each movie), but the event itself just disappears.

TL;DR: So what I do is that I have a recurring event, I duplicate it, go edit the duplicated recurring event, replace the old information in “Event Date/Times” with new Reg & Start time, remove the old recurring events from the list and put up new dates there. This apparently overwrites the original recurring event as well, which I don’t want to happen.

I’m wondering, is this a bug or is it part of the feature and working as intended? Is the duplicated recurring event somehow linked to the original recurring event? Thus when I remove times from the duplicated one, it removes them from the original event too?

Hei Kristiina,

OK, so duplicating a recurring event will keep that event within that recurring event series.

Editing that could affect the other events in that series.

Let me try and explain it (based on Event Espresso 3.1.32.2)

I create a recurring event series of 3 events, and I will talk about them based on their Event ID.

SO this creates event 1, 2 and 3.

I then duplicate event 1 which creates event 4.

For some reason, after duplicating the event it doesnt show me event 4 like you would think, it shows event 1 (I will get a ticket raised to look into that) so I go back to the event overview, find event ID 4 and edit it.

Editing that will work just fine as the default setting in the red box is set to just change this one event http://d.pr/i/EeOG

However, if you change that to the All Events in This Series option, what will happen is that event 4, 2 and 3 will get changed (because event 4 is just a copy of event 1), but event 1 will remain untouched.

OK, so what to do to get the result you want?

I would go back to the last event in the series(the highest ID number for those events) in this case ID 3, and I would extend the last event day date, and make sure that This and all upcoming events is selected.

Then I would edit the first event of the new week with the new times again making sure This and all upcoming events is set.

You may need to fiddle about with it to get exactly what you need as of course I dont know your date/time setup.

Hopefully though this will be a little clearer for you, if not please let me know.

Thank you for clarifying this Dean!

I tried to follow the tips you listed in the bottom of your reply. I think I’m doing something wrong here, because I don’t manage to get “This and all upcoming events” option to function. This is how I attempted to do it:

I created a recurring event for dates 18th, 19th and 20th of May with start time 17:00. Browsed to Event Overview list and went to edit the highest ID event in the series. (reference image)

I wanted this event and all upcoming events to have different start time, so I edited new start time (16:00) and checked “This and all upcoming events” option. (reference image)

Then I scrolled forward and added new dates: 21st and 22nd of May. (reference image)

Before hitting update, I made sure the “This and all upcoming events” option was checked. For some reason it had automatically been switched to “All events in the series” option while I added more dates, but I switched it back. But nothing happened: after hitting the update no notification about added or modified events, and when I browsed back to Event Overview list, there were no events for 21st and 22nd of May nor any start times had changed.

Moi Kristiina,

OK, so you had done it slightly different to me, and I didnt explain fully it seems so my apologies.

I had set the events up via the Automatic process, where you have done the manual date process.

http://d.pr/i/BJE6

I tested my system using the manual process and the automatic and automatic works as expected but I concur that the manual process isnt creating an additional event.

Now I am not sure if this is a bug or an expected process, but I will raise a developer ticket to look into it, and get some feedback added here.

Unless your dates are completely random, then you should be able to swap over to the automatic system successfully. Note that you will need to start the recurring events from scratch you cant convert a manually created set of dates into an automatic set of dates.
