Does this occur for a single event or all events? Will you review message settings for the event in question to make sure it’s set to send the default email?
License key issues should not cause any issues with emails.
To me, this sounds like a server issue, there could be multiple reasons for the emails not sending.
I would recommend signing up for a service such as Postmark or Mandrill (free up to a certain number of emails per month depending on which service you choose) then installing our Email Transaction Plugin (available through the pre-release channel) to send the registration/payment confirmations through those.
This removes any server issues from the equation.
