I am hoping that Event Espresso will be able to fulfill all of my Event and Ticketing needs – and I would like your help in deciding whether I should be using EE3 or EE4.

– I have only one website

– I sell tickets to 10-20 events per year; but I also use an event calendar to record schedules for classes and rehearsals

– I want to be able to display a calendar view of my events, but to be able to set it up so show different categories (so I could have several different calendars, based on event categories)

– I use Toolset to create Views and CRED forms to display my events and classes in different ways. I’m hoping that Events Espresso will allow me to use TYPES (from Toolset) to take control of the custom fields in Events Espresso so that I can manipulate them in Views (from Toolset). I found that I was not able to easily do this with Event Calendar Pro (in particular because they store their dates as strings rather than numeric time stamps; but also because it was difficult to get control of the custom fields through Types)

– I would like to be able to offer a “pay what you can” price for an event so the ticket buyer could enter any amount that they want to pay for a ticket

– I would like to collect extra info on certain tickets depending on the parameters of the event (like meal preference, etc.)

– I would like to be able to create automated reminders to send to ticket buyers to remind them they have an event coming up

– I would like to be able to send an automated thank you to a buyer after an event to thank them for attending

– I would like to be able to set up early bird discounts, and discounted ticket options for buyers who have a special Promo Code.

I appreciate any info you can give me on whether I should get EE3 or EE4, and whether or not it will work with Types.

Thank you!

Elise

Hi,

Thanks for your interest in Event Espresso.

You can test the premium version for free over at http://demoee.org

– I have only one website
– I sell tickets to 10-20 events per year; but I also use an event calendar to record schedules for classes and rehearsals

Each licence only supports one website.

– I want to be able to display a calendar view of my events, but to be able to set it up so show different categories (so I could have several different calendars, based on event categories)

The calendar can display events from different categories (colour coded if you wish) alongside a filter to allow visitors to only see events in a particular category.

You can also set a calendar to display only events from a particular category via the shortcode parameters.

We have no formal integration with this plugin (I’m assuming it is a plugin), though I would say EE4 is liekly to be better suited to it as it uses Custom Post Types. You could grab a copy of the DEcaf (free) version and if they work well enough together for your needs.

More info on decaf: https://eventespresso.com/event-espresso-lite-preview/

– I would like to be able to offer a “pay what you can” price for an event so the ticket buyer could enter any amount that they want to pay for a ticket

This is not something currently supported, but is on our wishlist so may appear in the future.

– I would like to collect extra info on certain tickets depending on the parameters of the event (like meal preference, etc.)

Each event can have questions set for it. We use question groups, so for example you may have a question group that you use on all events or one that is solely used for one or two events. Once the questions and question groups are set, you simply tick a box or two in the event editor and those questions will appear.

You can test drive EE4 premium over at http://demoee.org if you would like to check out the question system (decaf does not support custom questions).

– I would like to be able to create automated reminders to send to ticket buyers to remind them they have an event coming up
– I would like to be able to send an automated thank you to a buyer after an event to thank them for attending

While you can bulk mail attendees, scheduled mails are not currently possible. Again, it’s something on our wishlist.

– I would like to be able to set up early bird discounts, and discounted ticket options for buyers who have a special Promo Code.

This is possible in both versions, though the Promo codes in EE4 is still in Beta, meaning you would need the beta version of EE4 core to use it (these are provided to licence holders but note that beta versions may be buggy).

EE4 allows for greater flexibility with early bird discounts (it can be set for gradual prices changes), whereas EE3 has only a single early bird price option.

Please let me know if you have any other queries or need clarification on anything.

Thanks!

Thanks for your help, Dean.

A couple of other questions:

Is it possible to get a list of the slugs for the EE custom fields? As you suggested, I installed the free decaf version so I could test the compatability with TYPES – but I can’t figure it out because I haven’t been able to find a list of slugs for the custom fields.
(Part of the issue may be the name of the CPT itself – is it Events? Because I already have The Event Calendar Pro installed … which also calls it’s CPT “Events” … so I’m not sure what happens when both of these plugins are activated at once?

a couple other pre-sales questions about the functionality of Events Espresso:

-is there a way to add a ticket from the back-end without notifying the attendee? For example – to add a complimentary (free) ticket for a VIP attendee?

– is the Calendar an add on for EE4? (it seems to come with the decaf, so I’m not sure why I would need to pay extra to get it with EE4?) Does it come with EE3?

– is it possible to customize all the aspects of the checkout (like making it say “reservation” instead of “registration”)

I’m still a bit stumped on whether to get EE3 or EE4. What I’ve read said that EE4 is better – but it isn’t ready yet – so it isn’t actually better YET. Would it be better to start with EE3 and upgrade later when EE4 is finished?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Elise,

“Is it possible to get a list of the slugs for the EE custom fields?”

Not 100% sure which slugs you mean here, but I’ll give you my best answer:

Slugs (used in URLs)

events
venues
event-category
venue-category

Custom Post Type/Taxonomy slugs (used in code)

espresso_events
espresso_venues
espresso_event_categories
espresso_venue_categories

Having two plugins both using /events/ as a custom post type slug will end in tears. However, we do allow for ours to be modified. Please see this documentation: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/change-events-cpt-slug/

-is there a way to add a ticket from the back-end without notifying the attendee? For example – to add a complimentary (free) ticket for a VIP attendee?

You can register an attendee to an event in the back end and choose not to send out the emails. At this time it isn’t possible to edit an attendee to modify their ticket order, you would just have to register again.

– is the Calendar an add on for EE4? (it seems to come with the decaf, so I’m not sure why I would need to pay extra to get it with EE4?) Does it come with EE3?

The calendar is not included in EE4 Personal or Developer licences, but is in the Everything licence. If you are referring to the note at the bottom of this page https://eventespresso.com/event-espresso-lite-preview/, it relates to the calendar in EE3.

The EE4 Everything Licence includes, well, everything, so it is very good value: https://eventespresso.com/pricing/?ee_ver=ee4

– is it possible to customize all the aspects of the checkout (like making it say “reservation” instead of “registration”)

Wording can be changed for sure, either via the language files or a function (both basically translate the wording). We have a short guide here: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-change-wording-with-poedit/

Other than that it really depends on what you want changing. For example you can use some CSS or the action/filter hooks to modify it but the core process is usually not touched. More info would be required to give you a better answer.

Regarding EE3 or EE4, it really depends on your needs.

I would like to say that EE4 is complete and fully functional as much as any constantly worked on plugin ever is – it is not in Beta any more. However there are some addon plugins that have not yet been ported over to EE4.

If EE4 has everything you need for your business, then go with that – we think that we have improved EE4 compared to EE3 dramatically.

If EE3 has something that you absolutely must use but EE4 hasn’t got that yet, then I’d run with EE3 for now. Yes you can upgrade later on, we have a migration system in place for it.

Hopefully I covered everything, but if you have more queries or need clarification, let me know!
