A few questions….
1. We’d like to be able to collect payments using Authorize.net instead of PayPal. Can we do that with the Personal license? 2. The “custom files” add-on….does that just give you pre-made PHP files to use for customization, or is that what enables you to customize the look of Event Espresso? You can’t customize the look in the Lite version?
3. We want to have an Early Bird ticket price, meaning that if you buy the tickets before a certain date, the price will be less. After that date, new registrants would have to pay full price. Is this something we are able to configure using Event Espresso?

I see that Garth responded to your questions via email. I wanted to post his response here as well.
Yes, you can use authorize.net with the personal license of Event Espresso (good move by the way).
The custom files add-on does have some pre-made php files but it also creates a safe place that you can store your custom template, shortcode and other functions. If you use the Custom Files Add-on then you’ll want to watch to be sure your changes don’t create bugs/errors in Event Espresso. That might happen we improve our template files with a change that is required for Event Espresso to function properly which you may not have in your template….just something to watch for.

He did not answer my Q about auto adjusting ticket prices after a future date (Early Bird reduced rate). See above post.
Also….I’m confused on the custom files add-on…..I’m installing Event Espresso on a child theme that I’ve made from Twenty Twelve. I’d like to customize the look of Event Espresso–I know to edit the PHP files/create new ones myself. But am I unable to do that unless I upgrade from the lite version, correct? Would Personal achieve this functionality, or do I need to buy Business?

The paid version of Event Espresso has an early registration discount feature. You’re more than welcome to set up a test event and test it out on our test drive site here:

With the customizations you want to make, it doesn’t sound like you’d need the custom files add-on or the pro version to re-style the look of the registration forms. That’s usually done with CSS so you could add all the styles to your child theme.
