EE4: Our event has 4 ticket options, but only 2 viewable at a time. There were 2 “early bird” tickets then, after a certain date, they expired for 2 new options at regular price. In development, we created the first two tickets (named Early Registration-In Person & Early Registration-Virtual), then duplicated those and changed the new ticket names to Registration-In Person & Registration-Virtual.

We use Paypal. On the Early Bird tickets, the Paypal notification showed the full ticket description (Early Registration-Virtual for (event name).” However, now that those early tickets expired and the regular tickets are being sold, the Description shown on the Paypal notification is “Event Registrations for (business name) for (event name).” I have checked the tickets to compare the original with the current tickets and everything is exactly the same, with the exception of the ticket name. Any ideas as to why the ticket description suddenly isn’t showing in Paypal?

Thank you.

Hi there,

Which specific PayPal payment method are you using?

Thanks for the quick response. We’re using Paypal Express.

Thank you, so I’ve just gone through and checked the code used for this.

In short, the description set on the payment request doesn’t take the event tickets into account at all, are you 100% sure this change relates to the Early Bird tickets expiring?

That’s really odd. The client sent me a Paypal receipt from 8/2/23 when the early bird pricing was in effect and it showed this:

Description Unit price Qty Amount
Early Registration (In Person) for (name of event was here)
Item# 1 $110.00 USD 1 $110.00 USD

A receipt from yesterday for the “regular” price ticket shows this:

Description Unit price Qty Amount
Event Registrations from (event name was here) Item# 1 $135.00 USD 1 $135.00 USD

Could it be something changed at Paypal?

8/2/23

I assume that’s MM/DD/YY? (I’m UK-based, we use DD/MM/YY so have to double check)

Could it be something changed at Paypal?

Possibly, do you always stay up to date with the latest version of EE around the time they are released?

I’m trying to narrow down if this could be from a change made in an update to EE that was applied to the site so I can compare versions.

The difference here:

Early Registration (In Person) for (name of event was here)

Event Registrations from (event name was here)

Would suggest a different description is being shown.

The text using ‘for’ would be the LineItemName (a description for each individual ticket).

The text using ‘from’, would be the Order description (set on the whole order crated within PayPal).

See: https://monosnap.com/file/71GlvJs5YMkCCpKjS2zmYQZGvP43le

Now… why one description shown on X date and another on Y, I can’t say just yet

I’m in the US so you are correct on MM/DD/YY. The EE updates occur usually within a week of when an update is issued.
Thank you.

Hmm strange. I can’t reproduce this.

Can you add screenshots of the receipts so I can confirm what I’m getting?

Unless there is a difference between Sandbox and live (which wouldn’t be the first time, although PayPal never admit it) all I’m getting is the line item description as it should be:

Normal Ticket Test for Testing PayPal Event
{Ticket Name} for {Event Name}
