Paypal Standard not redirecting after payment (Re-Openned)

I am using PayPal standard and following payment confirmation, it does not automatically redirect people back to the thank you page. Instead it offers the option to click on a button that says “Return to Merchant” that requires the user to scroll down to see, and my concern is this button will rarely get clicks or seen confusing the user.

I reviewed the following feed and followed the instructions on PayPal to activation auto-return.

https://eventespresso.com/topic/paypal-standard-not-redirecting-after-payment/

I however am unsure if I am using the correct URL address for them to return back to the thank you page and wondering if that is the reason why the redirecting is not happening after PayPal confirms payment.

I also like to note I am currently still using sandbox to test out the check-out process. I ALSO do not have paypal pro, I am only on standard.

1. What url address should I input into “Auto Return” feature under payment preference
2. Is there a setting I am missing to force the auto return or are my expectations of auto-redirecting from paypal back to the thank you page unrealistic?

Hi,

We advise to use PayPal Express instead of PayPal standard. PayPal Express handles the auto return for you.

You can use your same PayPal account with PayPal Express, and this guide shows how to get set up:

You might also consider using the PayPal Express with smart buttons add-on (it’s included with your support license). One advantage of Smart buttons is the user never leaves your site. You can follow its set up guide here:

Hi there,

I’ll answer your question first, but please read this fully before you start changing anything.

1. What url address should I input into “Auto Return” feature under payment preference

It doesn’t matter, whatever is set is overridden by the transaction, however, PayPal require a URL for it to be enabled so we recommend you set it to point to your thank-you page.

2. Is there a setting I am missing to force the auto return or are my expectations of auto-redirecting from paypal back to the thank you page unrealistic?

No, it’s a valid expectation and should work fine. As mentioned whatever URL you set doesn’t actually matter it just needs to be a ‘valid’ URL back to your site and then the redirect actually uses the return_url we pass during the payment.

However…. PayPal Standard has been deprecated within Event Espresso 4 for a while now as we found it to be unreliable and various issues would come up with IPN’s which would then ‘magically’ fix themselves.

We deprecated that integration method in favour of PayPal Express, which does not require a different PayPal account type, nor a PayPal Pro payment etc, it uses a standard account but does use different credentials from that account than standard.

So, rather than trying to fix PayPal Standard I recommend switching over to PayPal Express, we have documentation on how to find your credentials here:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/paypal-express-payment-gateway/#locate

You go to Event Espresso -> Payment methods, de-activate PayPal Standard and activate PayPal Express, then follow the above to find the credentials from your PayPal account.

Express doesn’t use IPN’s meaning its much more reliable than standard.

Thank you. I initially started with paypal express but learnt it did not offer the option to allow consumers to pay as a guest. A lot of our market are seniors so likely not paypal customers but we needed a way to temporarily collect payments until our Bambora ecommerce account is ready to use.

I also ran into the issue with paypal express that the shipping address is confirmed on paypal which might give the impression they are getting the tickets in the mail and I had to completely eliminate it because of that reason.

Paypal reps have been very inconsistent with what is and isn’t available. If either of you know of solutions to the above while using paypal express, I would prefer to use it, just can’t under the circumstances above.

P.S. PayPal Standard started redirecting as soon as I took it off sandbox testing. I think that was the issue cause I was updating setting in the main account but still using the sandbox email account for the gateway.

Hope that gives some insight for others. Thank you.

PayPal Express with Smart buttons has some advantages where the user doesn’t leave your site, and they’ll be able to click on a button to pay with a credit card.

Hello, I am in the process of getting he Bambora third party add-on added to the payment gateway but still awaiting access to my Bambora account… In the meantime we’ve been using PayPal standard and just received a complaint that the paypal account was charged twice…

1. Through the original gateway
2. Through clicking “Make a Payment” on the Thank You page next to Payment Pending. They clicked on it and made the payment twice.

I am noticing that some of the transactions are taking up to 15 minutes to confirm the payment with event espresso, and so when they go to the thank you page after making payment, they see the payment is still pending… is it possible I missed a step in the integration process that would help speed up paypal communicating with eventespresso that the payment was accepted?

Would it make more sense to remove the additional payment method option?

Would PayPal express eliminate this issue when I add the Bambora Gateway?

Looking for a quick solution before I leave for the weekend and this happens again. 🙁

Thank you.

Thanks Josh, but to clarify, they have to sign-up to be a paypal user as there is no guest check-out. Does this sound correct to you? PayPal has been very flaky on telling me the correct information. Thank you.

What do they tell you exactly? From what I understand is PayPal offers guest checkout as long as specific requirements are met including Guest Checkout is available in that location. Also PayPal might prevent a customer from using the guest checkout if their system detects the transaction poses a certain risk.

I’m only referring to paypal express, I was advised they do not allow guest purchases through that option and I didn’t see the option when I did a test with it originally. Since I am in the process of activating the Bambora gateway add-on (awaiting my Bambora account to go live), I’m stuck with paypal :-/

Does this line-up with you experience with paypal express specifically?

I get a Guest checkout option when I test PayPal Express.
