Hi Support Team,

When Paypal standard is setup does it allow users to checkout with a Paypal account or with a credit card? I added Paypal standard to our site but when I try to check out it gives Paypal account or sign up for a Paypal account and use a credit card. Paypal standard doesn’t work like this on any other site I’ve used it on. It seems like Paypal is trying to force users to get an account, is this something new or is this how it works with your software? What I want to be able to do is allow my users to checkout with a Paypal account or without a Paypal account and use a credit card. I do not want to force my users to get a Paypal account.

Thanks so much!

Hi Elizabeth,

It turns out this is a PayPal account setting. When you go into your PayPal account you find some settings under Profile > My Selling Tools > Website Preferences. If you scroll down about 2/3 of the way down the page there is a setting that’s labeled “PayPal Account Optional”. You’ll want to set this to “On”. and then save.

Then, when you go to pay with PayPal it will display an option to pay by credit *if* you’re not already logged into PayPal -or- if there aren’t any cookies in your browser from the last time you were logged into PayPal.com. You may need to switch browsers or go into a private browsing mode to get the pay by credit card option to appear if you’ve logged into PayPal.com recently.

Ok, I’ve looked through this a bunch of times and I don’t see that option. I see: Auto Return (do I need to set this up and if so what is the auto return url for Event Espresso?), Payment Data Transfer (do I need to set this up?), Encrypted Website Payments, Contact Telephone number, and Express Checkout settings. I’ve combed through the rest of the settings in Profile > My Selling Tools too. I setup the IPN according to the EE instructions.

PayPal Account Optional should appear between “Encrypted Website Payments” and “Contact Telephone Number”. If it’s not there I can suggest contacting PayPal support. It may mean something in your account (bank account and email address) hasn’t been verified or confirmed yet. It looks like other folks have had the same issue:

The Auto Return is optional, if you decide to set it up your Return URL is listed on the Event Espresso>System Status page. Usually it’s the Thank You page.

Got this to work once the account & email address was verified. 🙂
