Hi, i’m trying to use the simplest payment without handling any sensitive credit card info in my hosting. I use paypal standard but it only give users options to use their paypal account or signup for paypal. Please advise.

Hi there,

The option to pay without needing to create a PayPal account is determined by PayPal themselves.

First check that the ‘Account Optional’ setting is enabled within your PayPal account.

Sign into PayPal and go to your profile, under ‘Payment Receiving Preferences’ you’ll find the above option, make sure it is enabled.

However some locations will always require a PayPal account when using PayPal Standard.

Have you considered Stripe? The fees are roughly the same but no account is required from your users.

My client prefer PayPal. I have checked the setting you mentioned and “account optional” is enabled. Location is USA and so far the test only give option for PayPal only. Is it because of sandbox mode?
If I use other options such as PayPal Pro and PayFlow Pro does it means that the website will be handling credit card sensitive information? Such as CC number, date, etc. I had experience trying to comply with PCI on a shared hosting and it was a nightmare.
What’s the difference between PayPal Pro and PayFlow Pro?

Hello,

I had experience trying to comply with PCI on a shared hosting and it was a nightmare.

If you would like to accept bank cards, then the best option will likely be Stripe or Braintree as the card information is collected securely through a modal window which means that information never touches your website.

https://support.stripe.com/questions/do-i-need-to-be-pci-compliant-what-do-i-have-to-do

PayPal Pro and PayFlow Pro are both on-site credit card options with PayPal that have a monthly fee. However, they are available in different countries and with Payflow Pro you connect as existing merchant account whereas with PayPal Pro, PayPal is the merchant account provider and the payment processor.

PayPal Pro is available in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

Payflow Pro is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.

Lorenzo,
Thank you for your thorough explanation. I still rather use the PayPal standard because it is easy and my client already prefer PayPal. Could you please help me why it is not showing CC option even after I made sure “Account Optional” is on and Location is US.

Hello,

If you are testing through your own account (e.g. a personal PayPal account), then PayPal likely recognizes that you have an existing account through a cookie and is therefore asking you to login.

I have cleared the browser cache and also I had 2 other people test it from a different location in US with the same result. Is it because of sandbox mode? I have checked all PayPal settings and cannot figure out why…

The guest checkout requires no additional setup from Event Espresso, it is completely based on your PayPal account, location and server ip.

You can use ‘Guest Checkout’ in PayPal Sandbox mode, here’s an example from one of my test sites – http://take.ms/XFjMC

The pay by credit or debit card section is shown there so its not because your using Sandbox.

However the account your are using must be a Business or Premier account and must be verified, personal accounts don’t have the option at all so it depends on the type of Sandbox account your using.

For details on the guest checkout option take a look here:

https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/About-Settings/How-to-make-quot-PayPal-Account-optional-quot-option-available/td-p/845267

If you still can’t get the option to display after working through that I would recommend testing the live account to confirm if that doesn’t show the option and if not, contact PayPal to discuss why.

ok, i got it to work… i think. But in the option to pay with credit card PayPal still ask for name, address, phone number, etc. I notice that in WooCommerce these info are automatically transferred. can it also transferred in Even Espresso? So customer only has to input the credit card info in PayPal. Please advise. Thank you.

Not yet. There is an open ticket for this to be added though.

Will it work with Stripe?

By default Stripe requests Card number, Exp month/year and CVC number – http://take.ms/Q8vVC

The users email address is passed over to Stripe and used as a reference for the transaction. There is also an option to collect the user billing address during the payment but those details are not passed from the registration to Stripe so the user would need to provide them there if requested.

Thanks. Seems like Stripe is a lot easier to use?

It can be yes.

The user selects Stripe as their payment method and will see something like this – http://take.ms/0VBQD

They click the Pay Now button and Stripe Checkout does the rest.

Once payment is made the user is directed to the thank you page and confirmation emails are triggered.
