Hi Josh – this is picking up the previous thread here: https://eventespresso.com/topic/paypal-problems-after-update/page/2/ Again, test registrations went through fine after removing the old templates, but registrations from other people are still showing as incomplete, even though their payment has gone through in paypal. Recent IPN log entry for a registration that is paid, but marked incomplete in EE:
Using BUILT-IN PHP curl methods |
Hi Michel, Can you clarify whether the test registrations were done using a live PayPal account or a PayPal Sandbox account? |
Hi Josh – the test registrations were done with a live Paypal account. |
Thanks Michel, Are any of the non-test transactions going through as complete? |
yes, some are. we can’t tell what the difference is between those that go through fine and those that don’t. The majority, however, show up as incomplete. |
Hi Michel, Sorry to jump in on this but i have also had a similar issue where Paypal transactions where being processed by Paypal but on EE showing as incomplete and end users not receiving any payment or registration emails thus requiring me to manually update the tickets and manually sending ticket emails etc.. After helpful advice the the support team (Jonathan big thanks to you) one thing they noticed on my install was that the Groupon add-on was not on the latest version. They mentioned that recently it had a name change however there wasn’t a notification of an available update in the dashboard so i must have missed it out when doing my usual checks and updates. So after being updated manually the plugin is now listed as “Social Coupons” and from what i can see after testing is that this may have been the culprit for me. Having runs some live Paypal tests my site is now back and running as it should be and the EE is now updated correctly along with the emails being sent to the end users. May not be the case with you but your symptoms are very similar so may be worth a try.. Regards, |
Michel, So did all the event registrations that came in today, which are all marked complete, need to get manually updated? |
it’s hard to remember, but I believe goldbeck and the two arnall registrations came through fine. It would be tempting to note they all belong to Calgary which was created today, but Winnipeg has been giving a lot of failed confirmations except for Rhonda Tough on Jan 4. |
I will start a separate listing of which ones fail and which ones work fine so I don’t have to backtrack…. |
When you can find one that was a confirmed fail, can you check the server logs for when that happened to see if there were any errors? |
With your eagle eye, can you check? An instant payment notification failed An instant payment notification failed An instant payment notification failed An instant payment notification failed An instant payment notification failed |
Hi Michel, I checked the PayPal IPN logs for these and PayPal is sending the VERIFIED message for each of these with no errors. Does the IPN History in the Paypal account show a FAILED status? If so, is there an error code displayed there? |
I don’t see any failed status in my IPN history in Paypal – they all show SENT status. |
This is very unusual, some transactions are getting marked complete, and these others are not. Do you have access to server error logs? (not the ipn logs, they are not showing any errors) This question is regarding your above post where you listed the transactions that did not complete. Are you getting notifications from PayPal or sent from your site that say “An instant payment notification failed”? If yes, who is sending them, and when do they arrive? Right away or later? I’m going to create a new IPN listener page on your to rule out any 301 redirect issues with the current page. It may help. |

Maybe my web developer Tracy has access to the server error logs. I don’t. Here are two more: PayPal: You received a payment of $52.50 CAD from Krista Lloyd (xxxxx@gmail.com) Hello Essential Message/MoMondays/Concentric Strategies Inc., The Paypal confirmation comes in within a minute of the failed notification. |
In case it helps, I noticed that the Failed transaction from Espresso comes before the PayPal notification of success: An instant payment notification failed |
What is so tricky about this is there are no errors in the IPN logs. The next step is to check the server’s error logs to see if there are any additional server errors that may provide clues on why the PayPal IPN continues to fail for most transactions. Have you considered switching to Stripe? They opened up to Canada, and are much more reliable: |
Don’t see any errors in the error log on the server. The server logs 300 errors – is that what I want to check? |
In the meantime, will check out Stripe… thanks! |
well we waited several days for this, but we finally got a successful transaction. Espresso: Winnipeg MoMonday Jan.28, 2013 registration confirmation |
OK, things are getting curiouser and curiouser. One person purchased 2 tickets in separate transactions. In the first transaction (01/13/2013 at 2:12 PM) Espresso returned a failed transaction, but PayPal charged taxes correctly. In the next transaction (Jan 13, 2013 19:07:21) Espresso was fine but PayPal didn’t charge any taxes. What gives? |
Hi Michel, How are taxes set up to be charged? Are you using the “Surcharge” feature in Event Espresso, or using the tax feature in the PayPal account, or something else? |
PayPal calculates the taxes. I know it’s a PayPal issue, but still it’s odd. |
