PayPal Payments Not Processing / Incomplete

Hello.

We just opened up a new event registration yesterday morning.

Issue: We’ve noticed that about 50% of the registrations are confirmed with PayPal payments (and subsequent confirmation emails are sent) and EE reflects these registrations as ‘Completed’. The remaining 50% read ‘Incomplete’, even though the PayPal payment confirmation email has been sent to us (user registers and pays via PayPal, confirmation of PayPal is sent to both admin and user however EE doesn’t recognize payment).

I’ve checked the EE error logs (both EE and PayPal IPN logs) and the MISSED PayPal IPN confirmations are not mentioned or noted in the logs.

It seems like we’re not the only ones dealing with this issue….

WP: 4.7.3
PHP v: 7.0.16
EE: 3.1.36.5.P

I noticed that the session_save.path error in system status page: /var/lib/php/session does not exist – contact your host to resolve the problem.

However I’ve confirmed that the session save path DOES work correctly and the respective site does have recent sessions saved. Session IDs don’t exceed 31 chars.

Your help is greatly appreciated in this matter.

Thank You,
-Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Your site is running a very old version of Event Espresso 3, so one thing that will help us help you is the site should get updated to the current version of Event Espresso 3.

Or, better yet, if you can migrate to Event Espresso 4, you’ll be able to use the PayPal Express gateway which is much more reliable that PayPal Standard. PayPal Standard was actually deprecated in Event Espresso 4 and we’re no longer supporting it, because the way that PayPal Standard does the Instant Payment Notification isn’t reliable.

Hey Josh,

My download portal doesn’t show any available EE3 downloads except for “Lite”. Please advise.

If we currently have an actively running event registration and we are to upgrade to EE4, will it require that we recreate all the events, questions etc?

There’s actually a migration path that will migrate the EE3 event data including events, registrations, and questions from EE3 to EE4 when you first activate EE4. There’s more information about the migration path here:

Funny how many PayPal issues are popping up all over the board today and the “solution” is that PayPal Standard should be dropped. Looking at the PayPal IPN logs and everything looks GREAT. Wish we would have a better helper on this matter! I’m in the middle of a massive event launch , forced upgrade to the latest version of EE3 so we’re not dealing with migration issues , even swapped over to Swipe payment gateway and NOW dealing with TLS issues even though I know I’m on TLS1.2.

Funny how many PayPal issues are popping up all over the board today and the “solution” is that PayPal Standard should be dropped.

We dropped the PayPal Standard gateway quite a while ago, after a number of months of dealing with its unreliability, and PayPal Express became available. This change did not happen today.

Looking at the PayPal IPN logs and everything looks GREAT.

They look great, except for the missing IPNS that your site isn’t getting, right?

Wish we would have a better helper on this matter! I’m in the middle of a massive event launch , forced upgrade to the latest version of EE3 so we’re not dealing with migration issues ,

May I ask what a better helper would be like? Should we not ask you to keep your site’s software up to date so that you have all the latest bug fixes?

even swapped over to Swipe payment gateway and NOW dealing with TLS issues even though I know I’m on TLS1.2.

May I ask what is the exact error message that you’re getting from Stripe?

Don’t get me wrong Josh, I appreciate your team’s quick feedback. I’d be happy to discuss my over-arching concerns about support in the near future, but now’s certainly not the time for that, and I apologize for my attitude, it’s been one of those days.

Back to the issue at hand.

1. IPNs are not being reliably received by our server. According to the PayPal IPN log each is sent out correctly. According to EE logs /wp-content/uploads/espresso/logs , a very high percentage were not being received

2. Stripe’s response:

{
“error”: {
“type”: “invalid_request_error”,
“message”: “Stripe no longer supports API requests made with TLS 1.0. Please initiate HTTPS connections with TLS 1.2 or later. You can learn more about this at https://stripe.com/blog/upgrading-tls.”
}
}

But I confirmed (multiple levels) that we were using TLS1.2 for the transaction and OpenSSL 1.0.1e–… but an update to the server packages *resolved this issue*.

And now to finally dump PayPal for a less-archaic solution.
