PayPal payments going through but not recognized by EE

Hi everyone –

I am running WordPress 3.5.1, EE 3.1.30.7P, EE Mail Chimp Integration 1.0.4, and am using a PayPal business account to accept payments. Last month I tested EE for an event that went live today by creating a $0.10 admission price and registering (I didn’t want to mess with PayPal Sandbox). I was able to submit my registration form, complete my registration, and then pay via PayPal. Everything ran smoothly and EE showed that I paid by putting a little green circle with a white check mark in it in the Payment column. I received all required confirmation emails that I was supposed to receive.

Today, however, I have real attendees registering for the event and the EE Attendee Reports page isn’t updating to show that they have paid. (there is a red circle with a “!” in it in the Payment column). I checked with our treasurer and she is showing that they have paid; she printed off a report from PayPal to demonstrate this. Further, one of the attendees emailed me a PayPal receipt that she received. But not only are they not showing up as paid in EE, they are not receiving the automatic emails that should go out once their payment is recognized by EE. Again, I was receiving these just fine when testing the system last month.

I know very little about short codes, CSS, etc but I need to get this problem solved so that our attendees receive their confirmation emails. The registration page is here. Thank you very much for your help!

Hi Ben,

We’ve put together a troubleshooting checklist for the PayPal IPN in the setup guide:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-set-up-paypal-ipn/#troubleshooting

90% of the time most issues can be resolved by working through the checklist.

Thanks Josh. Can you think of any reason, though, why it would be working fine a month ago and then not? Is this unusual?

Hi Ben,

It can be something as simple as one setting getting changed somewhere to make it stop working.

I ran down your list, Josh: here is what I have for each item:

–PayPal account is verified: Yes (otherwise we wouldn’t be obtaining payments from it, correct?)

–Four Required Pages in the General Settings are Correct: they should be as I have not modified any of the shortcodes at all. I took a screen shot of them here.

–No Maintenance Mode Plugins: none.

–Bad Behavior Plugin: I noticed that we are using Bad Behavior and that there were no PayPal IP addresses in the whitelist. Thus, I entered all of the IP addresses on this page into the whitelist. If this was overkill, I’d appreciate it if you let me know. 🙂

–Problems with Incomplete Payments: I don’t believe this is our problem. How do you define an “incomplete payment?”

–Gateway Files: I’ll be honest: I have no idea what this means. I will look into it.

Strangely enough, as I have been typing this some of the PayPal transactions have been randomly coming through and marked with the “green circle/check” and paid via PayPal. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern to this. Could this be because of the Bad Manners white list?

Thank you!

Another update for you, Josh: now over half of the attendees are showing up as paid. And one attendee who registered late last night has showed up as paid as well. Thank you very much for your help!

The ones who are not showing up as paid are those who registered before 9:32am CST yesterday (the day registration opened). Do you know what might have accounted for this? Should we keep waiting as we have with the other ones?

Hi Ben,

The Bad Behavior plugin does a really good job of blocking outside communication from other sites, including PayPal, so that’s why the Instant Payment notifications were not being received. Bad Behavior has a log of the addresses it blocks, so it’s a good idea to check that log from time to time and make sure it’s not blocking anything else from PayPal.

With the ones that aren’t showing up as paid may have actually paid, but the notification to your site was blocked at the time so it would be good to check the payment history in your PayPal account.

I think that we have it solved, Josh, as the previously “incomplete” payments are now showing as “paid.” I appreciate your help!
