Paypal Payments are Failing

My members are unable to pay through PayPal, getting the “Return to merchant and try a different payment method” error. I have screen shots showing what is happening. All seems smooth until it is time to log onto my PayPal account (shouldn’t I be able to also pay withOUT a paypal acct, btw?) I log in to PP at the payment window, and get the error page above. Interestingly, it shows an email address I am NOT using, just before and when the error appears: administrator@fairregistry.org. This is not a PayPal email address, nor do we use it on our site anywhere, that I’m aware of.

WP 3.5.2
EE 3.1.33.3.P
EECal 2.0.6.
EEMem 1.9.7.2
EERec 1.1.7.1

Hi there,

There’s a few things you can check that will help. The first one is the email address that is entered in Event Espresso>Payment Settings under PayPal settings where it asks for your PayPal ID. This needs to be the email address that you use when you log into your account at PayPal.com. Also, the PayPal account must be a business account, personal accounts do not work with the PayPal Instant Payment Notification feature.

As an aside, when you log into your Premier or Business PayPal account, there is a setting that you can change that will allow payments “as guest” (no PayPal account required) where your customers can by by credit card.

Thank you, Josh.
I discovered, to my embarrassment, that I’d never set up PayPal with EE – all our events had been free before this one. So, I set it up, but unfortunately am now getting a new error: The seller accepts encrypted website payments only. You cannot pay the seller through un-encrypted buttons. Please contact your seller for more details.

I went onto PayPal and confirmed that yes, we are set to only accept encrypted website payments. Is the default button you provide un-encrypted? How do I create an encrypted one? The buttons I created and use for donations and s2member work just fine, but I’m not sure I can generate a button for EE.

Event Espresso doesn’t create encrypted buttons. In order to accept payments using PayPal and Event Espresso you will need to turn off the encrypted payments setting:

To turn off this option:
1. Log in to your PayPal Account.
2. Click “Profile” tab or “Edit Profile” link.
3. Under “Selling Preferences”, select “Website Payment Preferences”.
4. In the section titled “Encrypted Website Payments” select “Off”.
5. Click “Save”.

We appear to have gotten it working. The webmaster did some changes in the API which I am not able to clearly relay (sorry). But we did get payments to be accepted, finally. Thanks for your help.
