Hi,

Some clients have been receiving the below email from PayPal. Now, when I do a test run I do not get this notice. What have I done wrong and how may I avoid this email from being sent?

Thanks in advance

Hello CLIENT NAME HERE

Please check your server that handles PayPal Instant Payment Notifications (IPN). IPNs sent to the following URL(s) are failing:

https://crowleyfolkschool.org/?page_id=873&id=61&r_id=27-509458714043b&event_id=27&attendee_action=post_payment&form_action=payment&type=paypal
https://crowleyfolkschool.org/?page_id=873&id=62&r_id=34-50952b4fb569f&event_id=34&attendee_action=post_payment&form_action=payment&type=paypal

If you do not recognize this URL, you may be using a service provider that is using IPN on your behalf. Please contact your service provider with the above information. If this problem continues, IPNs may be disabled for your account.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this issue.

Thanks,

PayPal

Laney,

It looks like you don’t have an SSL certificate, but those return URLs are “https”. Make sure that “Force HTTPS on Return URL” is not checked in Paypal gateway settings. Also, you need to disable any other SSL settings you might have (as in plugins, etc.).

I have the Force HTTPS on Return URL Turned off. See image link enter image description here
What did I miss?

Do I need an SSL certificate if all of my classes are being purchased through PayPal?

Also, I have added
[ESPRESSO_CART_LINK anchor=”” direct_to_cart=1 moving_to_cart=”Redirecting to cart…”]
to my class descriptions but the Add to cart image does not show up on the live page. example: http://crowleyfolkschool.org/classes/calendar/event-registration/?ee=24

Hi Laney,

Do you have an active plugin that is creating https redirects?

From the message you posted from PayPal:

Please check your server that handles PayPal Instant Payment Notifications (IPN). IPNs sent to the following URL(s) are failing:
https://crowleyfolkschool.org/?page_id=873&id=61&r_id=27-509458714043b&event_id=27&attendee_action=post_payment&form_action=payment&type=paypal

Please not that the URL starts with https, which will not work unless you have an SSL certificate installed. PayPal doesn’t require an SSL cert when using their standard off-site gateway, but something on your set-up appears to be redirecting to https.

So with your second question, I checked the page here:
http://crowleyfolkschool.org/classes/calendar/event-registration/?ee=24

And the Register link is working as expected with what you have set up as the add to cart shortcode. If you’d like that link to display as a button, you can follow the section of this guide under: “Customizing: Use a button instead of a text link”:

No, plugins that add an https redirect … actually no plugins that add any type of redirect.

second question answer … thank you

Laney,

In your PayPal account settings on paypal.com, what is the URL set as the IPN listener?

Laney Poire

Yes, they are set to PayPal.
What is an IPN Listener?

There was no IPN url there I just added crowleyfolkschool.org
I disabled the message settings. Should that be active?

Laney,

That is probably what was causing the problem. You do need an IPN URL set.

That’s what I meant by IPN Listener. Sorry for the confusion.

ahh … so, since I added a URL then it should all work in theory, correct?

Yes, that is correct. Please let us know if you have anymore issues with it.
