My clients are getting the message “Off Site Payment Method was not configured properly.”

I have double-checked the PayPal express settings per the documentation, tried to see more information in the logging (which did not shed more light on the error), and everything seems to be in order.

We have a dedicated SSL. I can’t find anything else wrong. We are in the middle of our ticket sales, and this is not good. Any suggestions would be helpful.

At the moment, I have disabled the PayPal Express payment method since everyone is just abandoning their ticket purchase.

Hi there,

Does the website have other plugins that take payments using PayPal? If so, you can try temporarily deactivating them to rule out a conflict.

Yes, we do. It is working. However, I disabled it, and Event Espresso still had the same problem.

Note that this exact setup was working last spring, March-April. No changes were made in the meantime. Do you have a setup checker tool to verify the settings, or is the only way to verify to use the shopping cart?

One thing that may help is you can check to see whether your server supports TLS 1.2 encryption. That’s a newer requirement for PayPal Express. You can install this plugin to verify that your host server supports TLS 1.2:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/tls-1-2-compatibility-test/

There isn’t a setup checker tool, but you can use a sandbox account and test payments on a testing event with debug mode on. There’s more information about how to do that in the PayPal documentation:

https://developer.paypal.com/docs/classic/lifecycle/sb_create-accounts/

The TLS checker shows that the Paypal setup is adequate, although it is a lower level of PHP and cURL than recommended. What to do now?

I would contact the host and ask them to update PHP and curl. Then also check to see if a sandbox account will connect to the site.

I found the logs in PayPal. The API Calls are not reaching PayPal at all.

You could also check with the host to see if there’s a firewall.
