Hi there,

We’re happy to help. Can you clarify a few things?

I tried registering on your site and was able to successfully get to PayPal to pay.

Where are you seeing this error “PayPal did not respond with the expected parameters.” Does that happen when you try to make a payment, or is that in the payment logs or the transaction record for a registration?

Do you know what changed recently?

You are also using PayPal Express, which is outdated and being deprecated, we recommend switching to PayPal Commerce: https://support.eventespresso.com/article/612-deprecated-payment-methods-2025

thanks for responding, The error occurs at the end of the transaction, right after the credit card information has been submitted. Instead of completing the payment, the site displays a red message box stating:

“PayPal did not respond with expected parameters.”

With respect to paypal commerce the organization is trying to locate the root account which is required to establish paypal commerce and the original treasurer is dead

Can you look through the payment logs for those transactions and see if there is an error message or error code? https://support.eventespresso.com/article/615-review-pending-payment-and-incomplete-transactions#logs

Does this happen for one specific event or all events?

I checked the payment logs, and the gateway response shows: “PayPal did not respond with the expected parameters.”

Since we only have one event, this issue is affecting that event specifically. Let me know how you’d like to proceed or if you’d like me to gather more details.

I checked the payment logs, and the gateway response shows: “PayPal did not respond with the expected parameters.”

Are those the log entries from within Event Espresso -> Payment methods -> Logs or those shown for each individual payment in the transaction?

It sounds like the latter but the payment method logs will have more details on this.

Go to Event Espresso -> Payment Methods -> Logs

Look for a Txn ID this has happen on in the right hand column BUT do not click there, click the ID to the left… that’s the ID of each individual log entry for a payment (a single payment can have many log entries).

Those will have a breakdown of the request details sent/received to/from the payment provider (in this case PayPal). Look any errors in the response of those logs, those are what we can use to troubleshoot this further.

Hi Tony,

I followed the steps you provided by going to Event Espresso -> Payment Methods -> Logs, but when I clicked on the left-hand column for the log entry, the ID is blank. Could you advise on what to do next?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Thank you for that information.

I’ll have to reach out to our development team for assistance with this. We have not modified our PayPal Express code in a long time, so the issue is likely due to a change on PayPal’s end or a service interruption.

Resolving this may take some time. Additionally, PayPal Smart Buttons is being deprecated and replaced by PayPal Commerce, which offers a more reliable and future-proof solution. More about PayPal Smart Buttons being deprecated here: https://support.eventespresso.com/article/612-deprecated-payment-methods-2025

Again, please switch to PayPal Commerce which is easier to use and offers more features and security. Once you have migrated to PayPal Commerce, disable the PayPal Smart Buttons option.

We will review this issue with the development team and when we have more information we will report back here.
