Paypal delivers "Things don't appear to be working" error

Apparently PayPal have changed the way their system handles transactions since March. As a result, some transactions produce an error page on checkout at the PayPal end with the message: “Things don’t appear to be working at the moment. Please try again later”.

Transactions on my site (which is running EE 4.9.46.p) are now producing the same error. Although I’ve looked at PP’s support for this issue, there is nothing that can be applied to EE’s configuration.

Is this an issue that EE are aware of and do you have any ideas for a solution?

Hi there,

May I ask are you using the PayPal Standard integration or are you using the PayPal Express integration? If the former, we recommend switching over to use the PayPal Express integration. You can use your same PayPal account with PayPal Express. Here’s a guide that shows how to get your PayPal Express API credentials:

I am having the same issues and according to the Pay Pal page. I have PayPal Standard which worked fine until at least 7:44am EST yesterday morning. Did something change since then?

I’m not aware of what’s changed on PayPal’s end, but you can avoid the issues with using PayPal Standard by switching to the PayPal Express integration.

Thanks Josh, this seemed to work. What’s the benefit of PayPal Express over the Standard? Is there a cost difference to us, the vendor?

No cost difference and the biggest difference is it uses newer improved technology from PayPal that’s more reliable than the old PayPal IPN.
