Following the announcement that we needed to update our payment processor as PayPal Express would no longer be supported, we switched to PayPal Commerce. However, when people access our site and try to register for a course through Event Espresso, there is just a spinning wheel over the area where they should enter their payment and they can not proceed. We’re now having to take manual payments by phone which is very time consuming. It seems like I can temporarily get it to resolve by clicking “update paypal commerce payment settings” button in the payment settings area, but then it seems to come back quickly. I have four pending orders sitting in my event espresso at this moment that I can only process by contacting the customer and accepting payment by phone.

Hi KimL,

How are you today?

Two things:

1. I noticed a type error on your website. Could you let me know which version of PHP your server is currently running?

2. In the meantime, you can switch back to PayPal Express to keep processing payments without interruption. Once we’ve resolved the issue with your PayPal Commerce setup, you can re-enable PayPal Commerce and resume using it.

We have PHP 8.3

I did switch that back over temporarily. Please let me know what our next steps should be.

Hi KimL,

You can have both PayPal Express and PayPal Commerce active at the same time, that way we can troubleshoot this but users still have the ability to make payments.

Can you re-enable PayPal Commerce so I can take a look at the cart please?

I have re-enabled PayPal Commerce.

Thank you.

Is your PayPal account a verified business account?

In the PayPal Commerce payment method settings, set ‘Checkout Type*’ to be ‘Express Checkout’ and save, let me know once done please.

Yes, it is a verified business account.

I have made that change and updated the payment settings.

Our website guy just updated the privacy policies and cookies. Can you see if it’s better now?

Termageddon is a new program they’re using for privacy and cookie policies.

I noticed on your checkout page that PayPal Commerce is currently set to only allow payments through PayPal, which means credit cards cannot be used directly on your website. When I attempted to register, I was successfully redirected to PayPal to complete the payment. While I didn’t finalize the transaction, if I had, I would have been redirected back to your website and received a confirmation.

Everything with PayPal appears to be working correctly now.

Okay. It seems to be working now. I did re-enable the credit card payments on the site because I did like that feature. It seemed less confusing than making people sign into their paypal. Many of our clients are registering on behalf of a business and they often get signed into their personal paypal which isn’t what they want. I assume this will still process through our PayPal account though since it’s still PayPal’s payment processor?

Just to explain a little about those fields, the error you were getting on the site originally was related to what PayPal all ‘hosted-fields’ (the card fields on that form) so I asked you to disable those to see what other errors popped up and that’s how I found the above.

Using those checkout fields is fine and a lot of people prefer to use them.

I assume this will still process through our PayPal account though since it’s still PayPal’s payment processor?

Yes, it’s all through PayPal 🙂
