Roughly 70% of the people registering for my event were unable to complete the process for one of two reasons: I have addressed the second issue in a separate support post, but the first issue is a real problem. When a person selects a ticket quantity and clicks the “Add to Event” button, they get a very confusing popup that presents too many options. This is the first place I lose them and have no record of their visit. I recommend just going directly to the registration page and putting the “View Cart” and “Return to Events List” buttons on that page as options. The next place I lose people is when they push the “Proceed to Payment Options” button. If they haven’t completed a required field, it shows in red, but it is often scrolled off the top of the page. There needs to be a message just above the “Proceed…” button that says “Please complete the required fields (see above)” Finally, when they get to the payment options, there is no explicit way to accept credit cards if I can only take PayPal. If they click PayPal, they see that it can take credit cards, but they won’t click PayPal because they don’t want to use it. There needs to be a way of showing them that they can use a credit card, even if it has to go through PayPal. This has been reported to me many times as a reason why people aren’t paying and leaving me with a mess to clean up. I need to call them, assure them that it is OK and even walk them through the steps online. And finally, If they register without paying, there doesn’t seem to be a way for them to come back and pay. It’s all on me as the admin to do this. I love your product, but please make it easier to use. |
Hi Bob,
If you think the pop up message there is confusing, then you can deactivate the Multi Event Registration add-on, which will elminate the pop up and remove/simplify the process.
Have you considered making fewer required fields? Also, do you have the very latest version of Event Espresso 4 installed? The reason I ask is because the recent update adds a validation message box that lists the missing fields.
Have you considered using another gateway like Stripe instead of PayPal? If they don’t want to use PayPal, then a good solution is don’t offer PayPal as the way to make online payments.
There is a way for them to come back and pay, but they will need the registration URL for their prior registration. If you’re using one of default the pending payment or payment reminder templates (or even the receipt template) those include a link to return to the site and pay. |

Josh, Thanks for the good info. Re MER, it is activated, but I can’t see any settings options that apply to it. What do I have to do to make your suggestion work? Re Required Fields: I have cut them down substantially, but they appear at the top of the form. The message needs to appear right where the submit button is, otherwise people will click the button and nothing appears on the screen to let them know what the problem is. Re Payment options, I will check out Stripe and see if I can make it work. |
You deactivate the MER plugin because it has no settings or options. When MER is activated, you’ll get the modals that pop up and the extra cart step that you don’t desire. If MER is deactivated, no extra cart step or modals.
It sounds like you don’t have the current version of Event Espresso 4 activated, and that’s why I asked if you have very latest version of Event Espresso 4 installed. This is because the newer versions of Event Espresso include a validation message box that lists the missing fields, and that validation box appears just above the button if the form doesn’t validate. |

Thanks, Josh. Deactivating MER fixed that problem. I am on EE 4.9.38.p which appears to be the current version. Also, I don’t see “Stripe” as a payment option. Is it hiding behind a different name? |

If I don’t supply a required field like last name, I still see no indication that there was an error that is visible on screen when I click the submit button. And since I have the current versions for all plugins, this problem still needs addressing. Ideas? |
Hi Bob, Here’s what I see immediately after I click the submit button on your website: https://www.evernote.com/l/AAQh3bwPY1xDsqwWEfS_4y2pPPPwRxXlNa4 You can download the Stripe add-on from your account page and follow this guide to get up and running with Stripe: |
