Payment isn't going through

Someone registered for my workshop and they stated that they completed the payment process. However it seems to be lingering in the shopping cart and has not yet transferred over to our paypal account.

Hi,

May I ask which type of PayPal gateway are we talking about? PayPal Express or some other gateway?

Hi there,

With PayPal Express EE basically takes some details from the user and passes them onto PayPal, PayPal send a URL back to EE which we redirect the user to.

From that point, the user is now on PayPal’s server and we have no control over what happens. However if they made a payment on PayPal’s side the payment would show as complete in your PayPal account.

It is possible for EE not to receive any details of the payment which means EE will show the payment isn’t complete on your site, but PayPal will always show the ‘true’ status of the payment.

So it sounds like you are saying the payment hasn’t made it over to PayPal, is that correct?

Have you logged in and checked your PayPal account for a payment from this user?

Yes, I have checked my paypal account and it hasn’t appeared there. I also asked a buyer to check their credit card and funds were not charged to her card. The issue seems to be that the funds are not properly tranfering out of event espresso

Thing is there are no ‘funds within Event Espresso’ to transfer anywhere so I’m not sure I understand.

EE creates a registration with a price assigned to it and then the user selects a ‘payment method’ (which is basically method to communicate with whichever payment provider the user selected in various different ways).

With the various payment methods we have, the way it works can differ but you’ve mentioned PayPal Express so we’ll stick with that.

The user selects PayPal Express and EE sends some details to PayPal who send back a URL for your site to send the user to complete payment.

At this point, it’s important to note that no card details have been taken and no payment has been captured at all by Event Espresso or PayPal.

So now we have a URL to send the user to, that’s exactly what we do and it transfers the user over to PayPal servers, completely outside of your site and Event Espresso. The user enters their card details on PayPal’s site, completes the payment and is then redirected back to your site again.

There’s a little more that happens behind the scenes where EE sends a request to PayPal to confirm a payment has actually been made (PayPal return simply ‘success’ if the payment is complete) but Event Espresso has almost nothing to do with the payment itself. No payment details are entered into EE, no card details are captured by EE, its all done by PayPal who then basically just confirm if the payment they took is successful or not.

So if there’s no payment in your PayPal account and there are no funds taken from the user’s card, did the user actually complete all of the payment processes on PayPal’s site?

Do they have a receipt from PayPal showing a payment was made?

Is there an I even I can register onto to see your set up?
