We ran some updates on an Event Espresso site and noticed that the updates caused a lot of old registration emails to get sent to previous registrants.
We updated everything on the site–plugins, the theme, and WordPress core. This also included a database update for the Impreza theme. What might old emails to all get sent at once like this, and how can we prevent this from happening again?
If there were stuck messages in the email queue, where the backlog was caused by a bug in the previous version of EE, then updating to a version that doesn’t have the bug could cause those stuck messages to send.
Prevention would involve keeping an eye on the Messages Activity List table from time to time and check for emails that don’t get sent when expected.
