Hi, I am trying to edit the notification templates and noticed that I can’t seem to add the subject to the template. I am able to type in the “subject” line, but when I send a test email, it comes up as (no subject). |
Hi there, Which specific message template are you editing? Are you adding the subject and saving the changes, then triggering the test send? The test email feature sends a test messages for the current saved template, it does not allow you to make changes within the page and then send a test email without saving (if that is what you are doing). |
Hi Tony, I did save before sending the test email, but it comes out as (no subject), I am trying to create a new template for Payment Received, Registration Approved, Ticket Notice and Automated Upcoming Event Notification. |
I did try on my end, and everything is fine. Kindly Check if it was saved? Does EE shows that the subject is there? Can you send us your system details? thanks |

Your using pretty old version of EE4 now, may I ask why you haven’t updated?
Yes, the test emails will show something like “Test email sent from {site_name}” but the ‘real’ emails use whatever is set in the template. One way you can test a real email is to register onto the went and then manually trigger the email for that registration, would that now work for you here? |
Tony, I’m so sorry, I didn’t even realize there was a new version! How do I update that? I think I will have to do that. |
Whilst the latest version is considered stable, are you about to hit a peak time for your registrations? If so you may be best holding off just a little until that has passed. We made some changes with a new event editor in the latest version of EE4 (which is actually currently at v5.0.9) and some visual changes to be more inline with accessibility guidelines… that can take some adjusting to get used to which is why I’m asking 🙂 |
We started early bird registrations, which will end at the end of August. Would it be better if I updated it then, or wait until after our event has occurred? |
Hmm so officially we recommend always using the latest version. Sometimes, the real world takes over and personally, I’d say that if that version has been working for you, don’t update right before your event/ticket sales are about to pick up unless there is a need/reason to. Having said that I should make it clear that we don’t officially support older versions, so if you do start running into issues with that version the first thing we would recommend is updating to the latest version as your issue may have already been fixed. Make sense? |
Tony, gotcha. Will it affect registration if I updated to the new version? Like would it mess up anything? If it’s just about learning how to navigate it, I might be able to just go ahead and update it. Also, how do I update to the new version? |
There is a ‘migration’ that needs to run, it will put your EE into maintenance mode and you just follow the on screen steps to complete the migration. After that it shouldn’t disrupt your registrations no.
Does it not show the update available for Event Espresso in Dashboard -> Plugins? |
They are asking for me to update my EE data using phpMyAdmin, but that plugin is not supported on my site. What information will I lose if I continued without backup? |
Huh? Who are asking you to use PHPmyadmin? Can you add a screenshot of what you see? |
After clicking on updating the plugin, I was brought to the Database Update Manager for EE. They are asking that I create a database backup, and the instructions lead to this page: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-back-up-your-site/ |
Oh, it’s advising you create a database backup. You can use whichever method you prefer, it doesn’t need to be done through PHPMyAdmin. So for example go to Dashboard -> Plugins. Search for ‘backup’ Updraft is a common one people use: https://monosnap.com/file/E0Na85n00BpWh2bN0jHMGKE5upFOPg Once active go to Dashboard -> Settings -> Updraft Backups. Click backup now: https://monosnap.com/file/XRvUBXsfFxrEJSHZAIPxRuryYB66Ob A modal should show, make sure the database and files are selected and backup: https://monosnap.com/file/pSLHbW7alCUcl1nUkPbtIPoPysT0Dv When finished you have a backup just to be safe. Now continue with the migration within EE. The backup is a safety measure incase things go wrong. EE is making changes to your database so if something goes wrong you may need that backup to get your data (I’m talking worst case here). |
Everything worked perfectly. Tony, I really appreciate your patience with this- I know what it’s like to get simple, dumb questions lol. |
Awesome, I’m glad it worked! There are no bump questions, the answers are only easy when you know the answer 🙂 |
