Our client has customers calling with an error: Nothing in your Event Queue

We tested with Chrome and works fine but when we tried with Internet explorer we get the error

Nothing in the error log: redacted

Direct link to a class you can test with IE
https://streetsmartsdriversed.com/events/ank-109/ click Register Now to view the error

Hi Bob,

Are you logged into the site in Chrome, but not logged in when you test Internet Explorer? The reason I ask is because I’m seeing the same issue with Chrome. Is this site hosted on WPEngine? If so, has WPEngine support set up cache exclusion rules for the Event Espresso pages?

Yes I’m logged in to Chrome on my Mac, I have a Windows VPS server I tested IE and found the problem.

Yes we’ve setup the exclusion pages with WP Engine over a year ago.

Problems started around Noon Friday when we updated to 4.6.6p

1- they cannot download a class schedule with more than 4 entries
2- this error

If we don’t hear something soon I’m going to restore to Friday morning so they aren’t getting so many client phone calls.

Hi Bob,

When you try the registration on Chrome and you’re logged out, does it work?

Correct it only works when I’m logged in

Hi Bob,

I can advise troubleshooting while not being logged in. If the theme or another plugin is caching anything like some of the WP scripts, or if the WordPress admin-ajax.php script is being blocked for logged out users by a plugin or an .htacess file rule it will result in the error you are seeing.

Have you tried anything with the links I provided?

What changed with the update to 4.6.6p on Friday to cause this? or could have?

I put the site into maintenance mode (not EE maintenance) disabled all plugins except for EE and disabled Object/Transient Cache and purged All Caches.

Same problem

Here’s the an entry in the php error log: PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function name() on a non-object in /nas/wp/www/cluster-30002/streetsmarts/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-core-reg/admin_pages/registrations/EE_Registrations_List_Table.class.php on line 515, referer: http://streetsmartsdriversed.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=espresso_registrations

Is it worth a try to downgrade to the previous plugin version?

Hi Bob,

Yes, and you can see that I did so because I said “The reason I ask is because I’m seeing the same issue with Chrome.” That means I went to your link.

What I can advise is revert your site to the prior backup and continue running the production site on 4.4. Along with that, you can make use of WPEngine’s staging server to test the major update there (ie 4.4. to 4.6) first.

The client has been taking manual registrations over the phone while being logged into the website so going back to Friday isn’t a good option at this point.

I have to say I don’t appreciate another obvious comment from you about hindsight we could have done this or that.

We’ve been through countless updates, many issues over the years with EE and never suspected this update was going to need testing in a staging environment first… why would you release the update if it wasn’t fully tested?

Hi Bob,

It turns out that Event Espresso 4.6 was fully tested across dozens of test sites before it was released. It’s also running all the live sites over on eventsmart.com. However it was not tested out on every possible server configuration with every other possible WordPress plugin and theme installed along side of Event Espresso.

Since you’ve discovered that reverting to a backup with 4.4 isn’t a viable option, I can advise cloning the current site live over to staging, and doing the troubleshooting there.

Yes Josh, again thanks for your reply and I can copy over to staging but what troubleshooting should we be doing?

We’ve determined it’s not a plugin conflict, there’s been no reply on the error logs we sent on Friday or today.

We can register when logged in but not for visitors?

What can I be doing to help find the problem/issue?

Hi Bob,

I recommend starting the troubleshooting on staging with the default WordPress theme and all of the WordPress plugins deactivated.

If you can then give us a link to the event on staging we can investigate.

I think we have some progress:

I exported the entire site to our local MAMP server and everything worked fine.
I then worked with WP Engine to verify all pages were excluded from caching and they were
I asked him to delete and re-add the pages we want excluded

Problem was solved with our testing and a remote VPS server running Windows.
Client is testing now.. more to follow
