Not Receiving Emails

We are not receiving emails informing us of a registration. I checked and the email settings are correct. I even tried to resend the message. This problem started on July 28. Please assist.

Hi there,

If you look in Event Espresso -> Messages, do the emails show as sent there with a green status icon?

Yes it is green with the time it was sent.
I checked my spam and trash folders and no emails there either.

EE doesn’t technically ‘send’ emails, what it does is build the content out, set up the headers and pass it over to wp_mail(), that does some of its own processing and allows plugins to hook in and make additional changes, then it passes the email over to your server to do whatever your server is set up to do to send email.

So if the email is green in Event Espresso, it means all of that happened without any error being thrown, wp_mail() took the email and didn’t return an error. At that point Event Espresso no long has any control over the email so if you don’t get them at that point it points to an issue with the mailsever.

So, who hosts the domain’s email? For example, gmail?

How is the site set up to send email currently?

We use Google Workspace. This is really odd as we have been receiving emails from Event Espresso for 6 years with no issue, with the last email notification we got on July 25. Was there a recent update that may have caused this issue?
BTW Just to check whether it’s an issue on the receiving end, I went to the “email template” and used the “test send” to a different email addresses ( personal gmail and yahoo accounts), and still nothing was received.

Ok, so how is the site set up to send emails?

Are you using an SMTP plugin to send the emails through Google Workspace?

If the site isn’t set up to send emails through Gmail then its basically sending them unauthenticated and there has been a push relatively recently to tighten down spam emails, you may well be getting caught in that.

The fix would be to send the emails via Google Workspace using SMTP (there’s multiple plugins available for this) for example:

We haven’t changed how emails are generated/sent within EE in a very long time, nor has WordPress themselves as far as I’m aware.

The last update we pushed out was 5.0.21 on July 16th, I can send you a copy of 5.0.20 to test if you’d like, but I don’t think it will fix this.

Unfortunately, that all still uses the exact same process as above, so any issues with that process will still happen with a test email.
