Multiple Currency Settings

Hi everyone,

I have done a bit of searching about this and the general consensus i have found is that EE wont allow me to use multiple currencies at the same time. I found one topic suggesting using a separate WordPress installation and setting the native language there. After looking on Trello i cant see anything to indicate that this has changed or is in the process of being done.

I would just like to know quickly if this is the case, or if in fact i am able to run multiple currencies from one WordPress Install. Sorry, i know this has been mentioned before on here but i just want a definitive yes/no answer.

Thanks!

PhilB

Hi Phil,

No, this is not currently available within a single site.

Whilst it initially sounds fairly simple to do there is a fair amount of information we need to keep track of for this to work (for example specific event and payment currencies). Then when you add MER into the mix it could be possible to register onto 2 events with 2 different currencies which again needs to be handled correctly so it quickly becomes much more complicated than it seems.

We do have plans for some form of multiple currency support within EE4 but we are working on what that will (eventually) be.

Note that although not ideal, some payment methods will convert the payment to a currency your account supports on the fly, its not the same thing as above, but could be an option.

Hi Tony,

thanks for the concise answer. I know its not as simple as a couple of lines of extra code, otherwise it would have happened. I just didnt want to say ‘no it cannot support it’ and then find a thread a couple of days later saying to the contrary.

I have been looking into integrating WooCommerce with EE also, so maybe i could run all payments that way? To be fair though i dont even know if WooCommerce will let me do what i need. Anyway, never mind.

I think PayPal will convert the amount to the correct currency when a customer clicks through to pay so that would suffice for handling the payments, i was just hoping to display the price for each event in the native currency of another country (swedish in this case). The events for each country would only be available to residents in that country so i wouldnt need to show them the other price.

Anyway, Thanks for the info Tony. Greatful for the explanation instead of a flat ‘No’.

Regards,

PhilB

Hi Phil,

Can you explain a bit more of the use case where you need multiple currencies? For example is it something like one ticket for one event needs to be in one currency, then other events use other currencies? Or is it something like you want to display prices in multiple currencies or in a currency of the user’s selection?

Hi Josh,

We are wanting to branch out and offer the same type of events in Sweden as well as the UK. The theme we use will translate to Swedish. The user would be able to select their prefered language. But the events there would be priced in Krona.

So we would want to display different events in each country, with the correct currency for the specified country. But there would be multiple events running in both countries. However customers from the UK would not be buying tickets for the events in Sweden, so we only need to display the one (correct) currency for the event being viewed.

If we could do that, then i think i would be able to avoid installing and running a secondary website in another language.

Failing that, i guess the option would be to install WordPress again on a subdomain. Translate it to Swedish and i would need another EE license for that one.

The message i had about this from the people who want it doing was as such
“Addition of Swedish “venue” map, with Swedish venue pages, where programmes are bought in Swedish currency?”.

I think they would want to service both customers from the one website. I accept there are limitations to what we can do with any system. They dont work exactly as desired straight from the box.

I still need to do some research on running two version, as we would still like the members to be able to communicate via the forums.

Ultimately, the ideal solution would be like this

User comes to website > user picks the location/language they are presented with the website in their chosen language > We display the events to them in their language and currency > the rest is the normal process of checking out and paying.

That would be lovely. I think though with the Organisation settings controlling the languages and currency i wont be able to do this.

I know some of the issues im facing arent EE related (such as running a second website) so il carry on with them, but if you have any input as to how i could achieve this it would much appreciated. If there is anything you want clarifying let me know and i’ll try.

Regards,

PhilB

Hi Phil,

This actually sounds like a good use case for a WordPress multisite installation. This way you’re only managing one codebase, but you can have a sub-site for each of the two locations.

Hi josh,

I’ve been playing with the multisite locally while trying out a couple of translation plugins.

Would i need to run multisite and 2 licenses for EE? I’m guessing that in order to set both currencies i would need an instance of EE on each sub site in order to set location in the Organisation settings. Is this correct?

Thanks for your time,

PhilB

Hi Phil,

Actually here’s what happens on a WordPress Multisite site: There’s only one installation of Event Espresso, and only one support key is set. The support key is set on the main site. There isn’t a license key field on the non-main sites’ Event Espresso > General Settings page.

Then, when you go to set up currencies and languages, you’ll set those up on each of the sites’ settings pages.

Hi Josh that makes sense.

With EE coming with the support key i wasnt sure if it would allow me to set up a secondary site with the same one. But if thats the case then fantastic. That would pretty much solve my whole translation and adding a second currency.

I’ve only been using the multi site for a couple of days just testing it and i’m starting to like the possibilities. Especially if its decided we will be expanding to a third country.

Thanks Josh, your help is much appreciated.
