Hello,

We have seen a banner on the back end of the website that is telling us as of Jan. 15th 2025 that PayPal Pro will no longer be supported, is this true? We have PayPal Pro and are concerned on this not working anymore. How long do we have before it stops working and we can’t accept payments anymore with it? How do we change to the PayPal Commerce with having EE3? We do not have a developer and would either need to do it our selves if it’s simple or would need to hire someone to do it. Does Event Espresso do something like this for a fee?

Please advise

Thank You

Hi there,

It’s true for EE4; your site currently uses EE3, which the above does not apply to 🙂

Event Espresso 3 is currently our legacy version, we only push security/critical updates for EE3 now as the intention is for everyone to move over to EE4+

So, would you be interested in looking into moving over to EE4 rather than continuing to use EE3? We can look into providing the migration as a service for you if its not something you are comfortable doing yourself.

Wow, thank you for this information because I have already spent around 4 hours in the last few days speaking with PayPal and GoDaddy about trying to get some new payment option and nobody can seem to assist me correctly! I been going crazy trying to get something done so we don’t start losing business from our website.

Question so I understand you correctly

So our EE3 is not losing PayPal Pro and we will not be affected with our payments processing?
Are you saying that the EE3 will be phased out at some point and we will be forced to move to EE4+? Or can we stay on EE3 with no future issues?
If we moved to EE4 as you mentioned, what are the differences and the cost?
If we moved to EE4, is this something Event Espresso would do for us for a fee? If so, what is the fee?
I’m being honest Tony, I have no idea what the difference is between EE3 or EE4, or even what they do for us. Our original guy years ago who created the website is the one who put the EE3 into the website for our Event Calendar. This allows us to add our classes, make simple changes to them and of course take payments when a client registers for a course. The system also sends us an email alert letting us know that someone registered for a course, we also receive another email letting us know a payment was received (Same email goes to the client). Other than that, I have no clue what EE3 does or offers over others like EE4. I’m in hopes I answered your question better in order for you to understand what it is that we need. Our main concern like any other business is being able to have our classes available and be able to take payments.

Thank you very much for your help and any other further assistance you can give!

Don’t mean to bother but could you please answer our question from the previous email on Jan. 17th 2025? In regards to the EE4 stuff we asked about from the email from Tony.

Thank you,

Hi Vincent,

My apologies for missing your reply!

So our EE3 is not losing PayPal Pro and we will not be affected with our payments processing?

Correct, EE3 isn’t changing and has not deprecated specific payment methods. You can consider EE3 itself as deprecated in that we support it but no longer actively develop new features on it, but we haven’t made any changes to EE3 payment methods.

If EE3 payment methods had been dprecated, you’d have already lost Paypal Pro at this point (just o highlight that PayPal Pro is still active on your site, so no changes to EE3).

Are you saying that the EE3 will be phased out at some point and we will be forced to move to EE4+?

Not so much force to move to EE3, but yes, EE3 will eventually be phased out.

We currently only fix critical issues with EE3 and no longer add new features to it, so you can consider it deprecated (support but not actively worked on) for the time being but that will change at some point.

Or can we stay on EE3 with no future issues?

Sort of, as PHP moves forward you’ll run into issues with the EE3 codebase as its not coded for PHP8 coding standards. So I can’t say you wont run into further issues in time.

If we moved to EE4 as you mentioned, what are the differences and the cost?

It depends on which add-ons you need, but you can stay on your current license as it stands and still use EE4.

If we moved to EE4, is this something Event Espresso would do for us for a fee? If so, what is the fee?

We do offer a migration service, we would need to do a quick assessment on the site to discuss the fee as there are many factors which can change the work involved (people hacking up EE3 to so something unexpected, saving data within the database in unexpected locations then means migrations need more work as the data schema has been manually changed etc).

If migrating is something you are wanting us to do I can set up a meeting to run through this assessment with you.

I’m being honest Tony, I have no idea what the difference is between EE3 or EE4, or even what they do for us….

Well pretty much everything you’ve just listed there is ‘core’ functionality with both versions, its just how they are handled, displayed and configured which would be different. The system itself is very different (creating events in EE3 is very different too EE4, it has the same basic idea but the interface has very much changed).

Our main concern like any other business is being able to have our classes available and be able to take payments.

I understand, that’s the core functionality regardless, it all just depends on what needs to be done to make sure everything works with the current theme and migration can be run smoothly.

Thats part of what we do with the assessment mentioned above.

Thank you for getting back to us Tony, I appreciate the information. We already had a problem when we tried to do an update with the PHP that deals with our emails, we did the update a while back and it gave us problems, so we had to stay with the older version of the PHP so we could still conduct business.

Yes, if you could get in touch with us via telephone to discuss the possible migration, we would appreciate it!

Thank you,

Vince
