I see that this question has been asked in another category, but I cannot see the answer as I have not yet purchased the product, so here goes:
After a user registers for an event, I’d like them at the same time to become a member so they can log in and check a private group area for homework, communications, etc.
From what I can see, user profiles are not being automatically created when registering for an event, is that correct?
This means that users technically need to register twice which is not ideal – is there a strategy or add-on to avoid the double registration?
I can use the Mail Chimp add-on to send out information, but am wondering if there is a way to have self-service content, too.
That’s correct, event registration by default does not connect to WP user registration.
However, in EE3, one of the developers has created a small function that can be added to your site that will enable user registration, when someone register for an event:
You can also use the WP User Integration addon for EE3, to block events to none members.

If you mean double user registration, then see the above functions. If you mean double event registration, then no we don’t have anything by default to stop that, though there is a small function that can advise them they have registered: https://gist.github.com/Apina/f11b5ce2db10f7b3bb93

I am not sure what you mean by “self service content”.
