Sizing of images appears to be a general problem after reading quite a few posts.
The current issue I am struggling is with the feature images used by the Android app.

The same feature image shows up in two places on the app. Firstly, on the first page after login where all the events are listed. I set the image size to 150 x 150 which gives good results on the event list page. When I click on one of the events, the image is unreadable because of course it is expanded up from 150 X 150.

If I use a larger image, then as you will guess I only get part of the image shown in the event list.

How do I resolve this issue?

Hi there,

Sizing of images appears to be a general problem after reading quite a few posts.

Can you post an example? I’m not sure what you are referring to here.

I set the image size to 150 x 150 which gives good results on the event list page.

So your uploading a feature image of 150 x 150?

When I click on one of the events, the image is unreadable because of course it is expanded up from 150 X 150.

An image of size 150 x 150 is the ‘thumbnail’ size within WordPress, setting a featured image of that size within the event itself means anywhere expecting a ‘normal’ image is going to ‘blur’.

But this…

If I use a larger image, then as you will guess I only get part of the image shown in the event list.

Is not expected, although the images will crop within the event list based on the aspect ratio.

Which event list are you referring to here? On the app or site?

Can you link me to an event you are viewing in the app so I can take a look at the setup?

Clearly I know the image of 150 X 150 is a thumbnail, but I will explain it a different way.
It appears you use the ONE feature image of an event for both the thumbnail on the app events list AND the event itself on the app as below. In my screen shot example below if I use the 150 x 150 as expected the app event list is perfect. Click on an event on the app and the thumbnail has been increased in size and gives a unsatisfactory result.
If I don’t have a “Feature Image” set for an event, then it displays the main header image instead which is cropped.
It would be better to have no image at all, rather than have a cropped or unreadable image, but apparently that is not possible.

It appears you use the ONE feature image of an event for both the thumbnail on the app events list AND the event itself on the app as below.

Yes, we do, because that’s what WordPress expects.

However, whenever you upload an image within WordPress it takes that image and creates a copy of it in the various sizes registered on your site. So ONE feature image is used to create multiple various different size images and then you call those various sizes depending on the content in which you use an image.

For example, the image you’ve uploaded to your site above is at:

https://events.abbottsann.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Screenshot-Android-Mobile.png

Yet that will automatically create multiple different sizes, the one I know is usually constant is 150×150 as that’s WP’s default thumbnail size, so here:

https://events.abbottsann.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Screenshot-Android-Mobile-150×150.png

So the reason I said this:

An image of size 150 x 150 is the ‘thumbnail’ size within WordPress, setting a featured image of that size within the event itself means anywhere expecting a ‘normal’ image is going to ‘blur’.

Is because by uploading an image of 150×150 as the feature image it means you are bypassing WordPress creating multiple copies at different sizes, effectivately meaning there is actually only ONE feature images because the image is already as its lowest size. That’s not what WordPress expects.

If I don’t have a “Feature Image” set for an event, then it displays the main header image instead which is cropped.

What is the ‘the main header image’? That’s not a part of Event Espresso so I need more details on how that’s set to see where it’s pulling that image URL from.

It would be better to have no image at all, rather than have a cropped or unreadable image, but apparently that is not possible.

We don’t have control over what happens with images onces they are uploaded into WordPress (the feature image function is a core WordPress function), we can only call specific images when needed. The app should be calling for a 150×150 thumbnail image on the event list but I need to view the event itself to see what is happening.

Can you link me to the event in question so I can take a look?
