Installation sends a batch old reservations

Unexpectedly, our EE installation sends transactional e-mails to our admin and clients, on events in the past. This has happened 3 times now, during the last few months. A few hundred incorrect mails are being send.

What could cause this unexpected behaviour? Is there a faulty cron-job or script sending these mails?
