I can't get [ANSWER_*] or [RECIPIENT_ANSWER_*] to work

I customized the Registration Approved email template, and in it, it makes more sense for the first and last names that appear in the attendee list section to be answers to custom questions. (We are running events that parents sign their kids up for, so the primary registrant is the parent, and we added custom questions for Student First Name and Student Last Name.)

To do this, I removed the [FNAME] and [LNAME] fields from [ATTENDEE_LIST], and wanted to replace them with merge fields that would populate with the answers from the custom questions.

I have tried placing [RECIPIENT_ANSWER_*Student First Name] [RECIPIENT_ANSWER_*Student Last Name] in [EVENT_LIST] and [ANSWER_*Student First Name] [ANSWER_*Student Last Name] in [ATTENDEE_LIST], but I’m not having any luck with either.

In both cases, when I send a test email, nothing at all appears where the shortcodes are. When I do an actual registration, I get the primary registrant’s first and last name, rather than the answer to my custom questions. It seems as if my changes are being overridden entirely, rather than just the shortcodes not working. Within the edit page, though, I can see that my changes have been saved.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Within the Registration Approved template, which message context are you edting?

See here: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/messages-system-working-with-message-contexts/

It sounds like you are editing one context and then checking another when sent.

Hi Tony,

I was editing the Primary Registrant template–but it turned out that in fact I was getting the Registrant emails, which was why things didn’t seem to be working!

Thanks for your help!

You’re most welcome.

Just to note, you can quickly spot which context’s are active by looking in the message template list – http://take.ms/e98pp

The Primary Registrant context is not enabled on the Reg Approved message type by default, so its grey.

A primary registrant is also a registrant, but the if you wanted to send additional info only to the primary registrant, you could also use that context.
