Hundreds of emails sent out – problem

I was notified today that hundreds of emails were sent out yesterday to people who registered last year, as well as this year. I am not sure how this happened and was looking to see if I can find out so this doesn’t repeat. Could it possibly be due to the fact that I updated the version of Event Espresso Nov 1? I’m using the built-in wp_mail function included with WordPress and have Godaddy as our host. There are also about 800 emails queued for sending that I would not like to send. Is there a way to ensure that those do not send?

Hi,

You go to Event Espresso > Messages and delete the unsent messages there. What can happen is if there was a problem earlier where the messages did not send, they can send later if the underlying problem was fixed later on.

For example, if wp_cron had been deactivated, then later re-activated, then the unsent messages in the messages queue can now be sent. So going forward you’ll want to watch that queue to see if any messages don’t send and either delete them from the queue or manually send them.

Ok, thank you for the quick response! Is there a way to delete all 800 emails in the queue at once or do I just have to batch delete on each page?

Technically the user interface would allow you to delete all, but that would probably bring the GoDaddy server to a halt.

What you could do instead is click the Screen Options tab on that messages page, and set the Pagination to 100. Then you can try selecting all, then use the bulk actions to delete. If the server doesn’t die trying that, then repeat 7 more times to delete the remainder. If the server hangs while trying to delete 100 in a request, you could try setting pagination to 50 or so.

Then, you can automate the deletion by going to Event Espresso > Messages > Settings and set “Cleanup of old messages:” to 3 months (or more, just change it from “Forever”). That will make it so after x months a message will be automatically deleted.
