I have tried to search the forums and get just what appears to be a google search. How do I set up email so that it can send out notifications?

Hi there,

Can you add more details, please?

For example, which notifications are you referring to?

If you mean the registration emails they will generally be automatic, EE builds the emails and passes them to WordPress, WordPress passes them onto your server for it to do whatever it is set up to do with them.

Meaning generally, you don’t need to set up anything for emails to work (although that’s not always the case)

Registration emails. During the demo I had got them. Now that I am setting up my site I am not getting them. In this specific instance I am doing a invoice. And am anticipating I would get some email notification.

If you go to Event Espresso -> Messages -> Message activity.

What do you see there? If you prefer you can add a screenshot:

Ok, so when the message shows an orange status bar, its ‘Failed Sending, Can Be Retried’ and it basically measn that EE correctly generated the email, worked through the message queue system and then got passed over to wp_mail() which is a WordPress core function that checks the email formatting, headers and adds its own if needed then passes it over to the server to do its thing.

It’s at that point your getting an error so something on your current mail server doesn’t like the emails, or possibly the servr isn’t setup to send emails at all.

Do normal emails work? For example WordPress password resets?

Either way in this case, you are going to need to set up the email service and you have a few options. First you can contact your web host and have them investigate why the emails are failing when passed to their server (this is usually long winded tbh), or you can use and SMTP plugin to send you emails through something like gmail (or whichever service you use).

Finally (and this is our recommend method), you use a transactional email service to send your emails, this is a paid service for your emails depending on volume and we have some documentation on those services here:

Thanks for the advise I will pursue that. Password reset emails do not work.

The password emails are simple plain text emails, so if those are working it’s a good indication that something is wrong with however the server is set to send emails (if at all).

You can also use a plugin called Check Email to send plaintext email to test (it hasn’t been updated in a while, however very little has changed that would affect that plugin).
