How do I change the link preview when I paste a link to an event?

When I paste a link to my event in an email, the link preview displays a random list of menu items from our site. How can I change this to be a description of the event?

Hi there,

I’m afraid I need a bit more information to understand your question, can you clarify something? Is the link preview something in the email client or something else?

It is something in the email client. I paste the weblink of the event in the email and the description in the preview that automatically shows up is just a list of menu items from our website. Not sure where the description gets set or if I have control of that through EE?

I don’t think this is something you can control with EE but possibly with a code snippet.

Which email client is this?

What happens when you paste a link to a normal post/page on your site into the client?

I am using Outlook/Office 365. It typically uses the snippet when I paste in a link to a web page or a post.

I did some checking into this and it looks like the preview links use the opengraph data from your site.

On testing this without outlook.com this is what I’m getting – http://take.ms/GaCB1

Which looks correct to me, are you getting something different?

That is exactly what I am getting. In the first event, the description is fine…the preview is the description that we have on the event. In the second event, it is a list of the 2nd menu item on our website followed by the sub-menu items. I thought maybe the difference was that in the second event the first thing in the description area was a picture (the only difference I could see between the two events) so I took that out as a test but it didn’t change anything.

At this point I am thinking it is not just an EE problem as I have found a page that it occurs on that is not linked to an event. Maybe there is something in the event or on the new page I found with the same problem that I can change to make it display correctly, or maybe it is something buggy with WordPress or with Outlook. Will keep digging in other forums to see if I can find similar issues.

Hi there,

I don’t think this is an EE problem, I did some digging into the link previews from Outlook/365 and can’t really find any solid information on how they are generated but some forums threads state it uses the Opengraph tags on the page (usually added by your SEO plugin but it could be done through others or even the theme), others state it does not.

There are a few threads that would point towards outlook caching the previews, for example:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/oemail-ocompose/outlookcom-link-preview-problem/18819686-7be9-4c3d-a387-31f90e2d942a

https://forum.webflow.com/t/outlook-email-does-not-display-open-graph-image/39065

(This cache would be on their end, not yours, so it’s not something you can clear)

You could try contacting 365 support and asking them how the link previews are generated, if the response for the previews are cached and if so, how long its cached and is there a way for your to clear that cache (I don’t think there is).
