Love the product, pretty confused about the licensing. I built a site for a client almost a year ago and have a Business License that will expire in 2 weeks. I have notified that client that they need to establish their own support license, and will that initial one lapse.

Please confirm that the software keeps working. The expiration is only for support and updates, correct?

I have a new client for whom I just need a core product download. Very simple implementation. Can I simply download and use EE3 or EE4 under my current arrangement and use it indefinitely? Do I need to do some kind of upgrade or something to add another site installation? Or would I only need to upgrade if I need a support for the second site, or do I need to start over and create a whole new account for this purchase?

Please straighten me out!

Hi Gary,

I’ll be happy to help. That is correct. The license is for updates and support. The software will continue to function until WordPress releases an update that requires us to make changes. This EE will need to be updated. If you would like your client to have their own account, they can register here and we can move everything from your account to theirs. https://eventespresso.com/wp-login.php?action=register
Just let me know, and I will move everything for you.

In order to use EE on another site, you will need to create a new account and make a purchase. Or, if we move your current license to your client’s new account, you can then purchase the new license through your current account.

Does that make sense? Let me know if you have anymore questions. I’ll be happy to answer them.

Jonathan,
So even though we installed it and it runs on another site without any license code, we’re still supposed to buy one?

For what its worth, I think it would be much easier to understand if a support agreement were a support agreement, and a license to use the software were a separately ordered line item, and that an account could hold as many of each type of item as a customer wanted to buy.

Gary,

Event Espresso is Open Source software, licensed under the GPL. You are free to do with it whatever you want. However, we can only support and issue updates to sites that have a license key installed.

Does that help? 🙂

Yes, thank you, I think I finally “got” it!
