We are looking for a solution to a high speed sales solution for a registration function we have online and I wonder how EE handles such events. Specifically, when our registration opens it happens on a specific date and time. At that time, we will have a couple dozen different events we open for registration, in EE they would probably be set up as different ticket types or something like that. However for a handful of these unique events (5-10), will have limited availability (an available quantity of 10-20) and for that limited quantity we may have up to 50 people who attempt to “purchase” that specific event. I wonder what type of inventory management EE utilizes and if EE would be an appropriate solution for us. We have used various carts in the past and they allowed our events to be oversold due to the way they managed inventory in their carts, meaning they did not actually remove an item from inventory until the transaction was completed. Due to the speed of sales at the minute our registration opens, this allowed overselling. We currently use an online ticket company named Brown Paper Tickets and their system works fine. Their support used the term “race type situation” for the scenario I described and said their system was built for that as it only allowed only the specified number of “items” to be placed into anyone’s cart. They then had 10 minutes or so to complete the checkout process. If they did not, their cart would be automatically emptied and available for sale again. Their system works well for us, but we would like to bring all of our ticket sales into our system for several reasons. EE offers all the functionality we need. I just want to see if the system was built for high speed sales like this or we need to stick with what we have. Thanks, Patrick

Hi Patrick, Event Espresso also updates the ticket or pricing option quantity when a payment is actually received so you would have a possibility of overselling.

Eventually, we’d like to include a feature similar to Brown Paper Tickets where tickets are reserved for a specific period of time and then released if they are not purchased.

Update: This feature is now included in Event Espresso 4 core. Tickets are reserved for up to 1 hour which helps prevent overselling when many tickets are being sold concurrently.

Thanks

Lorenzo
