Hi,
We have had customers who have bought tickets for someone else for specific events. However we would like to sell open ended vouchers that could be applied as payment for an event of the recipient’s choice. These would be sold outside the Event Espresso system. Could the check payment system be adapted for this process? At the moment we only accept Paypal.

You could, of course, do it manually. I would set up a question, not required, for the attendee where they can put in a gift voucher code. Then you would need to check the incoming registrations for a gift voucher code and if it is good, mark the transaction as completed.
The automated gift code system that was in the EE3 groupon add-on is slated to be added in a future version of EE4.
