Hi guys,
I had my hopes up that a Square payment gateway would solve the issue of gift cards by allowing payment using Square gift cards through the gateway. Apparently this is not an feature in the gateway plugin developed by WP Gateways (https://wpgateways.com/products/square-gateway-event-espresso/).
Thanks for writing to us. I do not think gift cards will work since they are only enabled on checkout on Square’s own store and app, and not merchant websites that integrate via an API.
Are there any other solutions available that you are aware of so we can utilize gift cards? The Promotions feature of EE does not work well for this, as it doesn’t draw down from a balance and cannot be sold (has to be entered manually).
I’m really stuck on this and is an important feature of our business.

Hi Derek,
Event Espresso does not currently have a gift card solution available. You could look into setting up & selling your gift cards with the WooCommerce “Smart Coupons” extension. There’s more information here:

The extension allows for exporting to CSV, which could then be used to import the coupon codes into EE’s promotions add-on via this little plugin:
https://github.com/Pebblo/eea-voucher-import
From there if you need to add features like keeping track of balances and/or automation of importing coupon codes into Event Espresso you could contract with a third party developer.

Yeah, the problem is keeping track of balances. I thought the Square gateway would solve that by allowing use of their gift cards for payment.
Any idea of how difficult (cost) it would be to create the functionality that automatically keeps track of balances using coupon codes? Is this something EE has looked at?

It would be a significant undertaking to build a system that automatically keeps track of balances. It’s not something we’ve looked into.
