fresh install of EE4 gives blank admin dashboard on activate

I am having a lot of trouble getting EE4 to work. I tried on another server running wp 3.9.1, php 5.3, mysql 5.0 and apache which had EE3 installed, though I tried both upgrade and fresh with same results.

I am now trying on a fresh WP 3.9.1 install, HHVM 3.1.0, nginx 1.6, mariadb 10.0.10. the wp install works fine and I have not had any other issues so far with other plugins.

I download the latest ee4 zip from this site, install via upload of the zip in my wp admin dashboard and when I click “activate plugin”, it goes away and spins for a little bit, then comes back with a blank page. This totally breaks the admin dashboard. Front end still works but when I try to go to dashboard, I get the following error message:

The timezone given (), is invalid, please check with this list for what valid timezones can be used FLD-DTTFLD-VALTIM-462

I can’t seem to find any info on this error on the web, so I think it could be coming from EE not WP?

Any assistance would be great. I have to restore from backup to make this work again.

I seem to have fixed this by going into phpmyadmin and adding a timezone string into the wp_options table for the timezone_string option.

Hi Andrew,

Before installing EE4, had you changed the WP timezone?

I’m guessing currently that it had been set to ‘j F, Y’ would that be correct?

No, it was blank. I changed it directly in the db to America/Toronto and the error went away.

I am not sure this is the issue I was getting with my old server but I am not using that one anymore so it was just this new server. So far so good after correcting that error.

I wonder if the activation script could warn about a bad timezone?
