Hello,

We have tried to upgrade from version 3.1.37 to 4.9.42 but each time we’ve upgraded, at least one of our upcoming events just completely disappears. Because of this, I keep deactivating 4.9.42 and going back to 3.1.37. When I do that, the event is back.

I can’t seem to find a good reason for this to happen.

Additionally, our “event espresso – calendar” is not loading.

We need to get both items up and running asaptually and I haven’t been able to find anything that has helped online yet. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Tracy,

Before you run the migration from EE3 to EE4 again you’ll need to do these two additional steps:
1) Check and make sure that the events in EE3 all have valid start and end dates.
2) When you activate EE4 you go to the Event Espresso > Maintenance page and delete all EE4 data. The previous migration data must be deleted before attempting another migration from EE3.

With regards to the calendar not loading, can you post a link to the calendar page here? Also, if you have Event Espresso 3 activated, you will need to use the EE3 calendar add-on. The EE4 calendar add-on is not compatible with Event Espresso 3.

Thank you very much. I suspect you’re spot on about the calendar issue as I’m not sure I rolled back to the previous version after finding out about the missing event. In any case, the calendar page is here: http://www.withinreachwa.org/get-involved/events/

Also, can you be specific on where I’m supposed to find that maintenance page as honestly, I’m just now dipping my toe into event espresso. Is that something that should appear AFTER I update?

I’m just uncertain on where to find that.

Thanks again, by the way.

Hi Tracy,

On the calendar page, in the source, there’s some old analytics code that’s throwing an error:

var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker(“UA-3386221-1”);
pageTracker._initData();
pageTracker._trackPageview();

It looks like the other part of the code was removed so the part that’s left is no longer functioning, and actually preventing the calendar’s events to load. Usually code like the above was added to a theme file or even a theme option. Can you remove it?

The Event Espresso 4 maintenance page will only appear if the Event Espresso 4 plugin is activated.

So your steps would be as follows
1) Backup the database
2) Deactivate Event Espresso 3
3) Activate Event Espresso 4
4) Navigate to the Event Espresso menu and find Maintenance near the bottom of the menu
5) Click on Maintenance then click on the Reset tab
6) Click on the Permanently Delete ALL Event Espresso Data button. This will only delete the previous EE4 data and will not delete the data from Event Espresso 3.
7) Reactivate Event Espresso 4 and follow the prompts to migrate the Event Espresso 3 data.

There is more info about migrating here:

First let me thank you!!! I didn’t think we were ever going to get this thing updated, so your instructions were extremely helpful.

After finally getting EE updated and the calendar plug-in updated, the events seem to be all there and are showing on the calendar… I think.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to any way to move past this month (other than waiting a day). Do you know a quick and easy fix for this?

Thanks in advance

Eeesh, so one more question (pretty sure it’s the last). I’m noticing that now I am unable to edit our menu. Do you know how/why the EE would affect that and possibly how to fix it? I’m confused as to how the two connect but really just worried about getting the functionality back.

Hi Tracy,

The missing calendar controls is an easy and quick fix: You go to Event Espresso > Calendar > Advanced Settings, scroll to the bottom of the page, and set Reset Calendar Settings to Yes, then save. Then you set the options to your preferences.

With regards to the menu editor, is that the menu editor in Appearance > Menus or is it something else? I’ve not seen it where Event Espresso affects the ability to edit the menus there. May I ask what happens if you try to edit a menu? Does it show an error message?

Thank you for guiding me on how to resolve the calendar issue. It worked like a charm (although in case anyone else follows these instructions, it did of course reset all the other calendar settings).

Yes, it is the one under Appearance>Menus and it’s not so much denying me the access/ability to add items… the new items are just not showing up at all. I can’t say I’m certain this happen with the upgrade to EE but I was able to easily add things about 2 weeks ago and we haven’t made any other changes since. It’s entirely possible something else is causing it.

If you think you might have come up with a solution or have found similar reports, please let me know.

Hi Tracy,

With the Appearance>Menus page, there’s a Screen Options tab on the upper right corner of the page. If you click to open that tab it will show you a list of different types of items, each with a checkbox. Are there unchecked boxes next to the missing items there? If so you check those boxes and save.

I’m sorry, I wasn’t very clear. I should have said, I am able to add the pages I need to the menu through Appearance>Menu (so yes, it is checked) and everything looks great, until I go to the actual website and none of the items I’ve added show up in the menu.

I am no longer convinced this is related to the EE update so don’t feel obligated to help me further (not that it wouldn’t be appreciated).

I cannot thank you enough for your help with everything!

Hi Tracy,

When you look at the menu editor page is there an option to “Select a menu to edit:” ? If so, is the menu that you edited the same menu that’s set to the Primary/Main Menu in Display Location below?

You can also click on the Manage Locations tab to check to see which menu (if there’s more than one) is assigned to the location on the front end of the website.

I figured out my menu issue. It was completely unrelated to EE, I forgot that I needed to add a custom field.

I do have an issue with the upgrade to EE 4. After following your instructions and everything appearing to be ok, it seems that the events have lost their corresponding category. Aside from needing that info back, it makes me concerned that we’re going to keep finding different things wrong with this.

Hi there,

Assuming the migration from EE3 to EE4 was run more than once, the original Event Espresso event categories would still be in the database, which would cause the errors you saw. Here’s how to fix:

1) Backup the database
2) Go to yoursite.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=espresso_event_categories
3) Delete all event categories
4) Navigate to the Event Espresso menu and find Maintenance near the bottom of the menu
5) Click on Maintenance then click on the Reset tab
6) Click on the Permanently Delete ALL Event Espresso Data button. This will only delete the previous EE4 data and will not delete the data from Event Espresso 3.
7) Reactivate Event Espresso 4 and follow the prompts to migrate the Event Espresso 3 data.

Awesome, that did the trick and after having to get a Google Maps API, everything is working beautifully from what I can tell.

Thank you for all of your help!
