Event widget not properly updating

Hi Guys,
I have a question about the event widget. We have 5 categories of events. I’d like to have the widget not to sort but to display all of the events putting a limit on the number that can be visible. I don’t see this available as an option in the pulldown window.

Is there a way to do this? Also I currently have educational programs selected and it is grabbing out of date events, but its set to no for show expired events. If I select “select value” it returns an incomplete list of the categories and all of the events shown are expired events from September

Upcoming events bottom right widget.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Jan,

By default the widget needs a category to be selected in order to pull the events.

You could alter the widget template SQL to pull in all the events or as a workaround create another category (for Example ‘all-events-cat’) and as there is no limit to the amount of categories an event can have, assign all the events to that category also. Then select that ‘all-events-cat’ within the widget.

Regarding the expired events.
The events the widget pulls events based on their ‘status’
it would appear the September events are ‘Active’ currently as I can register onto them.

If you go to Event Overview can you see the Septemeber events there?
If so do they currently have a status of ‘Open’?

Thanks for the feedback. As far as the all events category goes, What will happens on the calendar when an event has multiple categories? Right now each category has it’s own color.

I checked on the events in September and these are recurring events. The September date is the first time it occurred. How can I close a recurring event?

The problem is if an event is checked for recurring, it can’t be marked as closed, otherwise all recurring events will be closed. Kind of a Catch-22. We have many meetings that recur every month. We want to have a widget on the committee page that shows upcoming meetings. Because this is a recurring meeting the original date of the meeting which is in the past shows up not the upcoming meeting.

This seems like a fly in the ointment. Is there any way around this? (I think these cliches are realy dating me.)

Hi Jan,

Apologies for my delay getting back to you.

It sounds like when creating the events you are using the option:

‘Yes (all created events are available for registration between the above registration dates).’

When creating recurring events which close on the date of the event you need to use the other option:

‘No (each event’s registration start and end dates will be incremented according to a formula).’

If you can provide me with details of the events (registration dates, recurrence dates etc), or even log-in details so I can take a look I can give you an example of how this can be done for your events.

I added the all category and it works on the event widget fine, but it overides the other category background color in the calendar. Is there any way to make the All category background color not be the background color. How is the dominant color determined?

I must apologize, the widget will display all events if no category is selected.

As you mentioned previously you selected ‘Select Value’ the widget will have been pulling in all categories, the issue here is due to the previous events still remaining ‘open’.

Looking on the Calendar I can see this is the case as the previous events still display a registration form when selected (meaning registration_end has not passed for the event). This comes back to my previous reply in how the events were created with REM.

If you could send log-in details using https://eventespresso.com/send-login-details/

I will take a look and advise the best way forward from there.

Thanks. I changed the setting to the “No (each event’s registration start and end dates will be incremented according to a formula)” on all my recurring dates and that cleared up the problem.

Question: Is there is away to set a specific category of events to show only on the calendar but not in a widget where all categories display?

Yes, the calendar shortcode takes a category parameter. It’s outlined in the calendar’s documentation:

Hi Josh,
I need to rephrase this. We want to have a category that shows up in the widget, but not on the calendar. I’d like to be able to have a category called important events. This may be an event from category A, B, C, D, or E, which means some events would have two categories selected. I don’t want the important events category displayed on the calendar because it would upset the category color coding on the calendar. I tried this and if more than one category was assigned to an event the color defaulted to grey.

Thanks for the continued help.

Paul

Hi Paul,

There are additional CSS class names that get applied when the calendar category setting is turned on. This way you can have more granular control over what colors get applied to individual events (even if they have more than one category assigned to them).

Please see our documentation for more information:
