Event queue is empty

This used to work but now it doesn’t….

Created a new event by copying an old one, & updated the questions…all that stuff. I can open the event page (https://www.ninthdistrictpta.org/events/2017-summer-leadership-conference/) and see what I expect.

However, if I select a Qty. of tix and go to the next page, I get the dreaded “Event queue is empty – you need to select at least one event” message. I poked around and seems like this is most often associated with caches, so I checked at I had the right pages excluded from cacheing (W3TC) – I think I did. Next I just deactivated the W3TC plugin – no joy, same problem.

Now what?

I wish I could get thru just one event without some ‘ground breaking’ fubar – why can’t all the software just play nicely together? Fortunately, my ‘career’ in this position is ending so this is hopefully the last time I have to go through this, but I don’t know what to tell the next guy.

Hi Michael King,

why can’t all the software just play nicely together?

Sometimes a plugin will do things that its developers think is reasonable, but in the end will cause issues like the one you’re seeing.

I can give you an example of what can happen where we found that the NextGen Gallery was deleting Event Espresso’s registration session transients from the database. We even reached out to them and asked them to fix, but that idea hasn’t gained traction yet.

So caching may be contributing to the problem still on your site even with the W3TC cache plugin deactivated. This is because W3TC can still serve pages from a cache even while deactivated. You can reactivate the W3TC plugin, then go to its main settings page and set the option to disable caching features.

Then, can you remember any of the changes that were made to the site (new plugins, server configuration changes) that happened since the time things were working?

“why can’t all software play nicely?” was really more of a rhetorical question – I know you guys can’t design & test around all possible combinations of plugins. I’ve been thinking for a while that this lack of barriers between plugins is a fundamental weakness in the WordPress architecture. But that’s not your problem to solve…

I did try a different server VPS configuration in an attempt to resolve my long-standing issues with how my hosting company uses Varnish – other than that, just use usual maintenance changes. As I write this, I’m reverting to the prior configuration, as the VPS was regularly running out of RAM, even with EE4 deactivated. If I still have trouble, I’ll try deleting W3TC.
