Event List Order by Date

Hi

I tried using this short-code
[EVENT_LIST order_by=date(start_date),id]

but the dates are still not shown in date order, is there anything else I need to add.

[EVENT_LIST sort=DESC] sort in a descending order
[EVENT_LIST sort=ASC] sort in an ascending order
