I am not sure which tutorial you followed as there is no link but there is no need to modify the templates to show featured images in the latest version, simply head over to the Template Settings and make sure “Show featured images” is set to yes. Then make sure a featured image is set in the events. You may need to tweak the CSS of course, to make it look how you want it to.
Adding a short description can be done also from the Template Settings, and by using a “more” tag in your description.
If you wanted a description that is not the beginning of your event description, say a synopsis, then you would probably be best to use the Custom Meta fields to add a description and then modify the template to show them.
