Hello. I am looking for some help/advice with a site that uses Event Espresso that I may take over. Recently, I was asked to migrate a potential client’s site to my server to see if it could be updated and also redesigned. So, I used All-in-On WP Migration, which I have used many times before without problems, and it just would not transfer the entire site… and I tried for over 3 days multiple times. I had the plugin developer try and they were finally able to get the site to my server, but had to deactivate a few of the Event Espresso plugins to get it to work and to allow us to get into the dashboard. They think those were a problem and directed me to contact the developer of them. So, before turning them back on, and not know much about these plugins, I was wondering if they are compatible with the newer version of WP. The client really likes using this plugin so I was hoping to continue the use of it to make things seamless for them. They also have Events Calendar installed, if that has anything to do with these plugins. I also noticed that the Support License Key is invalid for a few of the plugins and will call that out in the list below. (this also states that either you have entered the wrong key OR you no longer have access to updates.) The site has the following installed:
Event Espresso (v 4.8.10.p)
Event Espresso – Authorize.net (SIM) Gateway (EE 4.6.0+) (v 1.0.2.p) (invalid Support License Key)
Event Espresso – Barcode Scanner (EE 4.6.0+) (v 1.0.5.p)
Event Espresso – Calendar (EE 4.3+) (v 3.2.5.p)
Event Espresso – Events Table View Template (EE 4.4.9+) (v 1.3.3.p)
Event Espresso – Grid View Template (EE 4.4.9+) (v 1.2.3.p) (no update prompt)
Event Espresso – iDeal Mollie Gateway (EE 4.6.0+) (v 1.2.2.p) (invalid Support License Key)
Event Espresso – Infusionsoft (EE4.4+) (v 2.1.2.p)
Event Espresso – MailChimp (EE4.4.5+) (v 2.2.2.p)
Event Espresso – MER – Multi Event Registration (EE 4.7.0+) (v 2.0.5.p)
Event Espresso – People Addon (EE4.5+) (v 1.0.2.p)
Event Espresso – Promotions (EE 4.8+) (v 1.0.2.p)
Event Espresso – Sage Pay Gateway (v 1.1.2.p) (invalid Support License Key)
Event Espresso – Sage Pay Gateway (v 1.1.2.p) DEACTIVATED FOR MIGRATION (I know, duplicate, but this one is deactivated for some reason by the migration developer) (no update prompt)
Event Espresso – Social Sharing (EE4.4.4+) (v 1.0.p) DEACTIVATED FOR MIGRATION (no update prompt)
Event Espresso – Stripe Gateway (EE 4.6.0+) (v 1.0.8.p) DEACTIVATED FOR MIGRATION (no update prompt)
Event Espresso – Ticketing (EE4+) (v 1.0.3.p)
Event Espresso – Vanco Gateway (EE 4.6.0+) (v 1.0.1.p) (invalid Support License Key)
Event Espresso – WP Users (EE4.6+) (v 2.0.5.p)

Any help would be so so so greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

I’m afraid the versions of the Event Espresso software you have installed on that site are very old and for the most part are no longer supported or compatible with the current version of WordPress. You’ll need the current version of Event Espresso and its add-ons to have compatibility with the current version of WordPress.

Hi Josh. Thanks for your quick reply. This is what I was afraid of. So, if my client has already purchased the old plugins, do they get free upgrades or do they have to purchase the new plugins again? Also, are the new add-ons similar in style and functionality as the old versions? And will I be able to easily import from the old to the new? They have a LOT of events listed. It’s just that they never paid to have the site maintained and updated… unfortunately.

They technically didn’t purchase the plugins before, they actually purchased one year of support and updates. Then they didn’t renew their support license. So going forward they can buy a new one year license, and then if they renew before expiration, they’ll get a 50% off discount.

Also, are the new add-ons similar in style and functionality as the old versions?

Yes.

And will I be able to easily import from the old to the new?

No importing would be necessary. Once the site has a valid license key, it’s a one click update for each of the plugins and add-ons. There will also be a data migration for when Event Espresso 4.8 gets updated to 4.9 which takes a few minutes. We recommend making a database backup before running the software updates as a precaution.

Okay, so if I update the existing plugins, the information attached to those plugins that the client has already entered, will automatically transfer over to the new updated plugins? Not sure how that happens, but if it does, I’m cool with that.

And if I’m seeing correctly, it will cost either $69.95 plus whatever Add-ons or $279.95 for everything, per year, correct?

Oh, and is there any way to test this before purchasing?

Hi again,

the information attached to those plugins that the client has already entered, will automatically transfer over to the new updated plugins?

No, that’s not how WordPress or WordPress plugins works. All of event, registrations, settings, and other information is stored in a mysql database alongside WordPress posts, pages, options, and other information. So there’s not actually any transferring of data when you update to newer versions of the software.

Oh, and is there any way to test this before purchasing?

You could grab the latest version of Event Espresso 4 core from Github as that’s freely available to download:

https://github.com/eventespresso/event-espresso-core

The add-ons for the most part aren’t hosted on public github repositories so you would not be able to test the add-ons.
