[ESPRESSO_EVENTS category_slug] not showing

I just performed a migration from EE3 to EE4 in a testing environment (of course), and despite the usual warnings, all the migration steps were completed successfully. I used the Decaf version, to avoid using the key in a test environment. However, the EE4 shortcodes for event categories don’t display anything, it just returns a blank area. I want to replace the old EE3 category shortcodes, that worked very well, on the new site. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

You don’t need to use Decaf on the testing environment, simply leave the support license key field empty on the test site and update Event Espresso manually on that site.

You can follow the guide here for updating manually:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-upgrade-event-espresso/#update-event-espresso-4

Can you post a full example of one of your shortcodes that your are using currently please?

Yes, I followed that article. Is there a difference in the migration process if Decaf is used?

A shortcode example that used to work in EE3 is: [EVENT_ESPRESSO_CATEGORY event_category_id=”sewing-101-1375305465″]

Looking at the categories in EE4, I see the correspondent shortcode for this category would be: [ESPRESSO_EVENTS category_slug=sewing-101-1375305465]

If I keep both shortcodes at the page, I see the EE3 one displaying just the shortcode, of course, but it’s blank where the EE4 shortcode was supposed to display something.

Is there a difference in the migration process if Decaf is used?

Yes, some.

Decaf does not have the same features as Regular. So messages are setup differently than is your migrated with Caff (only slightly but they are different)

Do you have decaf or regular activated currently?

If you navigate to Event Espresso -> Events -> Categories

DO you see your categories listed there?

Is the site live/accessible? If so can you link use to a page so we can view this please.

I’m using Decaf for the test. I’m going to use the regular one then after this.

By the way, I see the categories (that’s where I got the shortcode from). This is the test page: http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/class-registration/sewing-101/

I was expecting the EE4 shortcode to display something right above where the EE3 shortcode is, but there’s only that blank area.

It may be there are not events in that category. There are events in these other category archives:

http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/event-category/weekend-sewing-camp-1424798762/

http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/event-category/spring-break-camps-1386876307/

http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/event-category/no-school-days-1390517556/

This one says no posts match the criteria though:

So why did it happen? There are events in this category in EE3 – it was not imported for some reason?

Can you check to see if the events assigned to the category are in the future or in the past?

fashioncamptustin

May 17, 2016 at 3:54 pm

It’s ongoing – actually the events manager (not me) set it to end in 2017.

The migration takes into consideration both the ‘event’ and the ‘registration’ dates.

Can you post a screen shot of how the dates are setup for one of the events in that category that should be visible?

Ok, I found it at Event Espresso > Events, but it’s displayed as “inactive”. It was active on EE3. Why is it inactive then?

Here’s the screenshot: http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Screen-Shot-2016-05-18-at-11.47.03-AM.png

Hello,

According to the screenshot here (http://cl.ly/111O03042x20), that event may not have had both a start date and an end date.

In Event Espresso 4, each event needs an start date and an end date (along with at least one ticket option) so if it is ongoing, then set the date range to run for an extended period of time (e.g. a year).

Ok, I did set up a start and end date now, and also specified a venue by the way. I see the event now, but it shows “inactive”, and it shows “We’re sorry, but all ticket sales have ended.” in the event page. I tried raising the max number of tickets but it still shows inactive. Why?

Tony

You event end date has passed and your ticket sale end dates have passed – http://take.ms/BpQp0

That is why your event shows inactive.

Change the end dates for both of those to something in the future and that event will become active.

fashioncamptustin

May 19, 2016 at 12:01 pm

No, I changed both end dates to 2017. Just didn’t send a new screenshot because I informed that they have an end date now – I didn’t think it was necessary.

So here’s the screenshot then: http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Screen-Shot-2016-05-19-at-11.00.08-AM.png

But I still get it as “inactive”. Why?

Tony

They had an end date to begin with, it was just the same as the start date, and in the past, we can only go on the information we can see/have been told.

Is it published publicly or privately?

Screenshot of the backend: http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Screen-Shot-2016-05-19-at-11.00.08-AM.png

This is the test version:
http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/class-registration/sewing-101/

which displays now, going to

http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc/events/sewing-101-ages-8-and-up-tus/

but it’s still inactive. Sorry, just trying to understand EE4.

The ticket selector *should* be displaying there, but there may be something going on that’s not shown by those screenshots.

Someone from EE support can investigate further to find out why that one event continues to show as inactive. Can you send access to the site via the secure form on this page?

Hmm, strange, its not private or I wouldn’t see the event.

Can you set both a Reg limit and a Qty value please – http://take.ms/I3TyZ
(Something above 39 for each)

I would still recommend using the full version of EE4 on the test site, it shows more options for your event (which should not be causing problems but may well be).

Thank you so much Josh and Tony. I just sent the information via the secure form Josh indicated.

Hi Paulo,

I really couldn’t investigate since the FTP credentials you filled out were really not FTP credentials. I’ll echo what Tony said about recommending that you do the update to EE4 caffeinated before doing anything else. This may be a corner case bug in the migration of EE3 to EE4 decaf that doesn’t affect caffeinated.

fashioncamptustin

May 19, 2016 at 4:03 pm

I thought you mean the WP credentials by “access to the site via the secure form on this page”.

Ok, I’ll give it a shot with the regular version of EE4 and let you know if the issue persists.

fashioncamptustin

May 19, 2016 at 9:03 pm

So, this time I’m using the regular version of EE4: http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc2/class-registration/sewing-101/

Nothing changed, same issue. I put a reg limit and qty, as Tony suggested, but it seems to have no effect. Screenshot: http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc2/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Screen-Shot-2016-05-19-at-7.34.59-PM.png

I just sent FTP credentials via that form right now.

Thank you both so much in advance!

Hmmm, strange.

Looks like there is an issue with the event/datetime from the migration, If you add another datetime to that event it works again.

You still have access to the EE3 version of that event right? Can you take a screenshot of the date/times section within EE3 for that event and add it here please?

fashioncamptustin

May 20, 2016 at 11:02 am

Sure. This is from the live site: http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc2/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Screen-Shot-2016-05-20-at-10.00.45-AM.png

I need the full section here – http://take.ms/gVrOX

The above is only half.

Also what specific version number of EE3 is that?

fashioncamptustin

May 20, 2016 at 12:20 pm

“full section” was not specified previously.

Those events need to have start and end times, we can probably fix the EE4 event data for that event using phpmyadmin or similar, but I’m afraid the FTP access you sent is invalid.

fashioncamptustin

May 20, 2016 at 12:28 pm

I logged in twice with those FTP credentials…

Anyway, that’s just a dev site and the upgrade is going to be performed on the live one. Any way we can do this through the EE interface, as it should be?

Thanks

If you add start end times to the event (and any other events that are missing start end times) in EE3, then run the migration to EE4, it should all just work.

fashioncamptustin

May 20, 2016 at 6:04 pm

Is there any way this can be updated on EE4? it just seem weird because there are start and end times on EE4… they are supposed to work. From a logical standpoint if this is the issue, then having start and end times on EE4, regardless of coming from EE3, they are supposed to work.

Josh

It turns out that when EE4 migrates data from EE3, the events need a start and end time. If it doesn’t, the event data does not migrate correctly.

fashioncamptustin

May 23, 2016 at 11:33 am

Thanks Josh. I’m gonna look into this.

fashioncamptustin

May 24, 2016 at 11:46 am

Hey guys, just to let you know that I updated those start and end times on EE3 and exported again. So, when I migrated to EE4 it now seems to work well: http://vivendonacalifornia.com/dev/fc3/class-registration/sewing-101/

Thank you both so much. I’m going to perform the migration on the live site now.
