Hello. Is it possible to enable/disable messages on an event-by-event basis? We set up some of our “events” as a volunteer signup for a related camp event. The volunteer signups are free, so we would like to disable all messages except confirmation, reminders and batch – but just for the “Volunteer” events. Is this possible?

Hi there,

Yes, it’s possible to do but EE expects messages to be send for all events so setting this up may seem a little strange.

To do the above you would need to create a ‘Custom’ template for each of the message types and de-activate them using the toggle switch in each message (and/or setting the ‘To’ field to nothing) then assign that custom template to the event.

So in short you are creating message templates that do nothing and then assigning those templates to the event.

I ‘ll show you an example but you’ll need to do this for each messsage type, not just the example here, once you’ve create the templates you can select them in the dropdown on the next event rather than creating them from scartch again.

So say we wanted to disable the Payment Received message type. In the event edit the notifications section and click to create a custom template: https://monosnap.com/file/S2jkzNVbv0OSKItSzv6A7q60q21wdq

Give the new template a meaningful name, I recommend making it very obvious it is disabled, like so: https://monosnap.com/file/m7o4xLnDgyipMP8oGFmMoCWzpEMZYS

When you click to create, EE will create a new custom template and assign it to the event, now click to edit it: https://monosnap.com/file/7ZDsou8kRDMSan6Ud1lfsWX9k3uoPp

Now disable the current context (Likely Event Admin): https://monosnap.com/file/aQ4UOSXnhqpRvixEvSQbPwSWyFuFkF

Save and select the next context in the dropdown at the top and click ‘Switch Recipient’ to switch to it. Now repeat the above: https://monosnap.com/file/HlmyKldv4A0oGM201sPaBRGMsk3KMh

Do that for all of the message contexts to be sure nothing is triggered, for more info on message contexts see: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/messages-system-working-with-message-contexts/

Close that new tab EE opened to edit the message template.

Repeat for each message type (again, remember to switch through all recipients on each message type and disable them)

Then on the next event you want to do this on, you simply select the {Message type} - DISABLED template in the dropdown (if you followed my example for all of them) and that message type will be disabled on the event.

Make sense?

Yes. That makes sense. Thank you very much!
