We recently added Stripe but realized we don’t like some things about how it saves “contact info” for the cc info.. So, we are trying to switch it to Authorize.net… HOWEVER, to sign up I am asked if I need option A) payment gateway AND Merchant account, or option B) Payment Gateway only. I don’t know what either of these are. Basically, we need to be able to register multiple people under 1 “order” (many teachers from 1 school for example) and the billing contact info needs to be something the buyer adds them self, not something pulled from an attendee’s registration. Sometimes a school will register 10 people for our event, but the secretary is the billing contact and her info needs to be stored for the cc, not an attendee’s. Hope that makes sense. Anyway, we have the registration form set up through EE4 but need to find a payment plug in that supports our needs. If I already have EE4 is THAT my “Merchant Account?” Thank you!!!!

Hi there,

A merchant account is basically a specific type of bank account used to collect and hold your fund during transactions before they are transferred to you actually bank account.

A payment gateway is a service used to actually do the transfer/payment, so the service used to actually take the funds from the customer.

Auth.net net allows you to use their payment gateway service if you already have your own merchant account, I’m guessing that you don’t have one already as you would have needed to apply for one yourself so it is likely you’ll need both a merchant account and a gateway.

Are you using Auth.net SIM or AIM?

SIM is where the user is directed to Auth.net to pay then directed back to your site.

AIM is when they stay on your site to make the payment (note you take on much more PCI requirements when you use this payment method)
