EE4 Not saving custom layout override when creating/editing events

Hi,

Don’t know if this is new or not.

Using latest EE 4.8.10

I’m using latest Canvas theme (5.9.11) from Woothemes.

When I add or edit an event, with my Canvas theme I have the option of saving a custom layout (regular theme pages are full width and let’s say I want a page with a column on one side or the other). For pages, posts, etc. this works as it should, but with my events, it just ignores my change and resets it back to the default.

Is this fixable?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

This looks like a change in the Canvas. I have an older copy of Canvas that I run on a test site and the Canvas Custom Layout settings are saving and displaying the layout changes for my events. Can you contact Woo support and file a support ticket so they can take a look?

Hi,

Checked with Woothemes.

They say since the problem only occurs with EventEspresso, the problem lies there.

As a test, I disabled all plugins except those from EventEspresso, on my staging site and the problem persisted.

Help?

Paul

Hi Paul,

That’s really unfortunate that they said that. Did they make any suggestions on how to fix their theme so it works with custom post types?

As I mentioned before, I have an older copy of Canvas installed on my test site, and the Woo Themes custom layout feature works as expected. If the problem lies with Event Espresso, I’m at a loss on what we can change in Event Espresso to make it work with their current version. If they have any suggestions on how to make it work with their current version, we will gladly review.

One other thing you can check Paul:

Does your Event Espresso event editor page throw any JavaScript errors? You can use something like Firebug or Chrome’s web inspector to check?

If you see a JavaScript error, please let us know and we’ll follow up.

There are no errors.

But, yours is the ONLY plugin/extension I use with WordPress (and I use a few) that this does not function properly with.

It is VERY frustrating (and I’ve told this to Woothemes as well) when two vendors who I’m paying for support, just point fingers at each other instead of trying to help.

Hi Paul,

I’m sorry that you feel like I’m not trying to help. To be clear, I’ve downloaded the current version of the Canvas theme, and have tested the custom layout override, and when I save an event using EE4, the custom layout override saves as expected!

Are you running any custom functions via a child theme functions file? Along with that, when you view the event editor, can you see if the heartbeat API script loads?

I did some more testing on my staging server and here’s what I found.

If the Event Espresso – MailChimp (EE4.4.5+) plugin is active, the edit change does not work. If it is deactivated, it does work.

That’s with only the following plugins activated:

Event Espresso – 4.8.10.p
Event Espresso – Calendar (EE 4.3+) – 3.2.5.p
Event Espresso – Events Table View Template (EE 4.4.9+) – 1.3.3.p
Event Espresso – MailChimp (EE4.4.5+) – 2.2.2.p
Event Espresso – WP Users (EE4.6+) – 2.0.5.p

So, to me, that points at the EE MailChimp plugin as the culprit.

Thanks for the update. I sent a note over to the developer of the MailChimp add-on and he identified the problem and fixed it. The fix will be in the next update for the MailChimp add-on. If you’d like the fix before the next version is released, I can package up an advance copy and email it to you if you’d like.

Hi Paul,

I sent you an email. If for some reason you don’t get the email, you can download a copy of the MailChimp add-on that has the fix by clicking this link:
