WP version 3.8.1
EE 4, no add-ons
New installation

Am I missing something? I’ve looked at several other threads about this issue in EE3, and I remember EE3 having a setting for “use fancy email headers” but I can’t find anything similar in EE4.

I’ve got a little bit of text on the “thank you” page instructing registrants to check their spam folder, and that is okay-ish though it does feel unprofessional.

But the emails sent to me (as admin or event creator) are all also going to spam. This is really too much to bear. How can we fix this?

Hi Susan,

EE4 doesn’t have the fancy headers option, and honestly it rarely, if ever, helped with emails going to spam. It was used more from am aesthetic point of view.

EE uses the default WordPress system to send emails, and thus your server and it is up to the recipient email client as to whether the email is considered spam or not.

This isn’t solely related to Event Espresso, I’ve installed a brand new WordPress e-commerce site and had the same issues of all mails going to spam. There are countless forum posts in the wilds of the internet all suffering from WP emails going to spam.

We have tried our hardest to limit the emails being seen as spam, but we can only do so much.

You could try adding SMTP support either via a WordPress plugin such as WP Mail SMTP or via a service such as Mandrill or Postmarkapp.

These can help to improve mail delivery reliability.

“I’ve got a little bit of text on the “thank you” page instructing registrants to check their spam folder, and that is okay-ish though it does feel unprofessional.”

We added that because email filters tend to be over zealous with unknown/untrusted emails, just like what you are experiencing.

Hi Susan,

The problem with emails is there are so many steps in which EE has no control. Basically EE issues an email command and hands over the content to WordPress, WordPress hands the email over to the server using the settings within PHP which hands over the email to sendmail which then should send the email (unless configured differently by the host). Any of which if incorrectly configured can cause the emails to go to spam.

If using a shared host it is also possible for the host IP to be blacklisted causing all email sent to marked as spam.

We recommend using transactional email services such as Mandrill or Postmark to ensure emails are handled correctly. (Personally I use Mandrill (its free up to 10,000 emails per month) and would recommend using the plugin wpMandrill to connect to it)

Using services such as Mandrill cuts out a lot of the uncertainty, EE issues an email, hands it over to WP which then sends it to Mandrill who take care of the rest. Mandrills business model is based on correctly delivered emails and as such is usually more reliable than your host. You can also view reports on what is happening with the email, open rates, bounce back rates etc and if using MailChimp for subscriptions lists you can also integrate the two together.

Hope that helps 🙂

Thank you, both of you. That is very useful information. I believe this is a shared hosting situation (this is my client’s site; I have FTP access only at this point), so that may explain why this is happening here, where these types of emails (via contact forms or from WordPress or what have you) do NOT happen on my own server, which is not shared.

Tony, I will go check out Mandrill. I generally appreciate the work of the fine folks at Mailchimp. Thanks for the recommendation.
